This issue was brought to the foreground by a recent ad- vertisement by the new maga- zine Tikkun that aims to re- place the prestigious Commen- tary, now in existence 46 years, because it is neo-conservative. The editor, Michael Lerner, was not content to add his voice as another expression in con- temporary Jewish life. But to our dismay he arro- gated to himself the role of being the only legitimate "al- ternative" to correct Jewish thought and opinion. The title in Hebrew clearly reveals the editor's intent, namely: "To fix, to repair, to improve." His im- plied message is clear: a Jewish magazine should ex- pound the ideas of the left polit- ical spectrum, otherwise it is a deviation. Elie Wiesel and Robert Alter resigned from the board of Tik- kun, the former stating: "I do not like the aggressive tone against Commentary, and magazines should not be created against other maga- zines." Elie Wiesel accurately expressed our sentiments. As we review the recent his- tory of Jewish dependence on the liberal element, we are im- pressed with numerous disap- pointments. Karl Marx, the apostle of socialism, the grandson of a rabbi, turned against his people with a feroc- ity matched by Hitler. Because of his closeness to academic circles, he influenced many important figures against the JewS. In post-World War I Poland, the Jewish left — the Bund — opposed Palestine as a refuge, and preached Socialism. In dis- couraging emigration to Pales- tine the Jewish left thus in- creased the number of poten- tial Holocaust victims. During World War II Roosevelt, the darling of lib- eral Jews, rejected every plea to attempt saving some of the Jews in Germany, and even re- fused entry to a shipload of ref- ugees fleeing the Hitler in- ferno. The British Labor govern- ment and the infamous "White Paper" closed the doors to Palestine, thus sealing the fate of those trapped in Europe. What occurred in Soviet Russia in the last years of the Stalin rule is well known. His paranoid "doctors plot" and the murder of many Jewish intel- lectuals were the most out- rageous crimes against inno- cent Jews. It was small comfort to the dead victims that they were later "rehabilitated." The Soviet attack against Is- rael after the Six-Day War was unprecedented in fury. The Soviet could not forgive Israel Dr. Milton J. Steinhardt is a Southfield psychiatrist. for not committing suicide to further Russian hegemony in the Near East. The experience in the United States has similar overtones. With few exceptions, notably Bayard Rustin, black leader- ship adopted a resolution in 1968 critical of Israel's resis- tance to annihilation in the Six-Day War. When reminded of the tre- mendous moral and financial support by Jews to Civil Rights, including the sacrifice of lives, some blacks responded that the Jews are motivated by a "bad conscience." We noted that the left- dominated Democratic party refused to adopt a simple reso- lution condemning anti- semitism because it might have alienated Jesse Jackson. Two left Michigan con- gressmen, Conyers and Croc- kett (for whom this writer once voted) are clearly PLO apologists. It is disheartening to learn that the magazine The Nation, should spout anti-semitic ver- biage. Gore Vidal used The Na- tion to accuse Podhoretz of Commentary of loyalty only to Israel, and challenged his right in a "host-country" to be criti- cal of Vidal whose ancestors fought in the Civil War. It was indeed a "brazen racist hate" attack against a prominent Jewish leader and loyal American. Podhoretz states that "the right is trying to expel anti- semitism from its ranks, and the left is giving them a home." In summary, we may state that our vigilance must be di- rected against the extremism of the right as well as of the left. Currently, however, the reality is such that the anti- semitism of the left is the most visibly active. However, we as Jews must not abandon our traditional pursuit of justice and compas- sion, with emphasis on dignity and self-reliance — and we must continue to participate with all the progressive ele- ments of both parties. . Not Ready For Full Ties Brussels, (JTA) — Foreign Minister Marian Orzechowski of Poland said that his country cannot reestablish diplomatic relations with Israel under existing conditions, though it was moving in that direction. Israel and Poland.recently es- tablished mutual interest sec- tions in Warsaw and Tel Aviv, respectively: Addressing a press confer- ence at the end of a two-day official visit to Belgium, Or- zechowski maintained that the causes that led Poland to break ties with Israel after the 1967 Six-Day War still exist. He cited the Middle East conflict and the Palestinian issue.
