ly nothing in writing, except
Kimche's personal notes.
What is clear is that
Reagan later in September
telephoned Prime Minister
Peres to express thanks for
Israel's role in helping to win
the release earlier that month
of the Rev. Benjamin Weir, an
American hostage in Lebanon.
Recently, the Senate Intel-
ligence Committee's closed-
door investigation of the Iran
arms scandal focused on the
missing money, perhaps as
much as $30 million.
Defense Secretary Caspar
Weinberger testified and was
reportedly grilled about
allegations that Iran paid
"bargain prices" for the TOW
anti-tank missiles, spare
parts for HAWK anti-aircraft
missile systems, and other
weapons sold to Iran since
President Reagan's January
17 "finding" authorizing the
sales.
The Pentagon, according to
Attorney-General Meese, was
reimbursed only $12.2 million
for the weapons taken from
U.S. stockpiles, reportedly
about one-third the current
fair market value of the
weapons delivered to Iran.
Iran is said to have trans-
ferred between $25 million to
$35 million to secret Swiss
banks accounts this year for
the American weapons. The
"profits" are said to have
gone to the contra rebels in
Nicaragua, even though they
deny receiving anything ap-
proaching that sum.
U.S. investigators suspect
that many millions of dollars
may have wound up in the
pockets of private arms
agents and middlemen.
In addition to the shipment
of U.S. weapons to Iran this
year — via Israel-- the Ira-
nians also obtained at least
two shipments of weapons
directly from Israel last year,
the first in August and the se-
cond in November. Those
deals were made directly be-
tween Iranian and Israeli
agents. The weapons came
from Israeli stockpiles and
the cost was determined by
Israel.
They have said, however,
that the Israeli arms agents,
Nimrodi and Schwimmer,
took sizeable commissions for
those first two Israeli deals.
Meanwhile, McFarlane told
Congressional committees
that Kimche had brought
"persuasive" evidence to
Washington in July of last
year aimed at encouraging
the U.S. to first establish a
military relationship with
Iran.
According to published
reports, McFarlane said that
Kimche had brought a
lengthy list of some 800
senior Iranian officials and
military officers prepared to
open a dialogue with the U.S.
