morose turkey. Color this one
disappointing, too.
As we've observed in so
many of Scorsese's movies, he
seems to believe that people
just ain't no good. So we get a
strange thing here. The film is
ostensibly about the regenera-
tion of Fast Eddie (Newman) as
he tries to teach the tricks of
the trade to a high-spirited kid
(Cruise). But what we get is a
very depressing insight into a
sleazy world where the people
are pretty rotten. C'mon Scor-
sese, lighten up!

Crocodile Dundee (rated:
PG-13) This was my big sur-
prise. I went reluctantly. And
for the first 20 minutes or so I
thought I had indeed made a
mistake. Girl reporter from
New York goes to Australia to
interview the "Croc" in the Au-
ssie outback. They trek; she's
gutsy but foolhardy, he's brave
and laid back. It was all rather
predictable.
But then the picture flips.
Girl reporter takes the "Croc"
back to New York. And while
relatively predictable from
this point on, too, it's a lot more
charming and a lot more fun.
Nothing in this comic fan-
tasy will tax your brain. But it
should tickle your funny-bone
in a modest way. Don't be put
off by its huge success. (It's
taken in more at the box office
than any foreign film, ever.) It
is a most pleasant confection.

Blue Veluet (rated: R) If you
can still catch this on its way
out of the Detroit area, you
should. It's a very dark
comedy-mystery-adventure
laced with liberal doses of
sadomasochism, blood and vio-
lence.
Nice wholesome boy living
the good-old-fashioned clean
life finds an ear in a field on the
way home from school one day.
This detached human remnant
proves to be his key to the dark
underside of his Andy-Hardy-
type town.
The "bad woman" he meets
in the nether world is played by
Isabella Rossellini. The re-
semblance in face and voice to
her mother, Ingrid Bergman, is
startling. And she shows lots of
promise. Along with lots of
skin.
Dennis Hopper is wonderful
as a drug crazed thug. I took
the whole thing in a non-
realistic way as a myth, so the
violence, which usually turns
me off, didn't get through to
me. If you're queasy, you may
want to exercise caution.
