And 'Home' For Shabbat

With modern technology, you can work
all week in America and be in
Jerusalem for the Sabbath

JOSEPH AARON

Special to the Jewish News

I

t hit me somewhere over
Belgium. Or maybe it was
England. Somewhere be-
tween the movie and the lox-
and-bagels breakfast.
Wherever it was, it was
when I was coming home
from my latest visit to Israel.
And my shortest. I left late
Thursday night of one week
and was back early Friday
morning of the next week.
It was on the way back that
I began to think of how in-
credible it all was. Incredible
to be going not just 6,000
miles one way and 6,000 miles
the other, but to be going
from exile to holyland and
back to exile, all in the span
of six days.
And yes, I very definitely
did rest on the seventh day.
It was an exhausting trip
and maybe it was my exhaus-
tion or the jet lag or the hec-
tic pace or one too many
cocktails or all of the above,
but the result was that my
mind began to wander as I
flew home.
And what it came up with,
as it wandered, was that if I
really wanted to, it was more
than possible for me to spend
my week working in America
and spend my Shabbat pray-
ing in Jerusalem. Spend each
and every week doing weekly
sorts of things in exile and
each and every Shabbat do-
ing Shabbat sorts of things in
the Land of Our Fathers..
It can work. All you have to
do is leave New York on the
seven o'clock flight Thursday
night. You'll arrive in Israel
early Friday afternoon, have
time to get ready and then it's
Shabbat in the Holy City. As

in Friday night at the Wall,
making kiddush and later
havdalah in Jerusalem. You
can even go out for a real
Israeli falafel Saturday night
before you have to head back
to the airport for a 1 a.m.
flight that gets you back to
New York early Sunday mor-
ning. Come Monday morning,
you're back at your desk. And
you can do that week after
week.
Now of course there are the
practical realities of how
much that will cost, of being
able to take Fridays off, of
wear and tear on the body,
not to mention the mind.
But the fact is, and this is
what blew my particular
mind, that it can be done. You
can live here and spend every
Shabbat there.
I think the reason that
fascinates me so much is
because it says a lot about
how far we've come and where
we all find ourselves at the
moment. And because, I
think, it says a lot about how
so-called progress has out-
raced our ability to under-
stand it or deal with it.
The last 100 years have
seen an incredible shrinking
of the world. You can go vir-
tually from here to anywhere
in 24 hours or less. Pick up
your phone, push a few but-
tons and you can talk to
anyone anywhere. Mini on
your TV and you can see
anything going on anywhere.
For thousands of years,
Jews the world over dreamed
of going to Israel, struggled
to get there, despite the long
distances, the primitive forms
of transportation, the lack of
communication links, the lack
of a sovereign Jewish State.
