were misleading their victims

How could the oppressed re-
scue themselves when the
entire world was indifferent to
their plight?
Nevertheless, the abandon-
ment of fear is vital to normal
social living and to sharing in
community and the govern-
ment towards which there is
loyalty. When a person sub-
mits to panic, there is the
danger of the destruction of the
• very society toward which
there is an aspiration of
partnership.
In his acceptance speech for
the Nobel Peace Prize, Elie
Wiesel said: "The world must
always take sides when tyr-
\, ants endanger human lives
and dignities."
There may never be "a world
taking sides" for human lives
and dignities if individuals
will sink into fears. It is when
there is fearlessness that there
can be an attainment of the
craved-for unity of peoples
- striving to prevent calamities.

welcomed with the appeal of
"Fear Not," wih an admonition
not to panic. The current hope
is for a year introducing years
of blessings and peacefulness.
Even if they are to be judged as
calamitious, there are the
warnings of dangers from nu-
clear threats, apparent devia-
tions in basic international re-
sponsibilities, in domestic, so-
cial responses. When there are
fears, there are the collapsing
hopes of overcoming the nega-
tives that confront mankind.
Only in a spirit of confidence
can such negatives, and many
others, be overcome. Fears will
multiply dismay.
For a welcoming sign of con-
fidence in a better future, the
suggested symbol for 1987
therefore is: "Fear Not." It's
one way of assuring peace of
mind and a sharing of tranquil-
ity with fellow humans.
Chanukah adds a Macca-
bean cheerfulness to the
urgency not to panic. There is
no better way to observe the
Festival of Lights than to add
to it the slogan: "Fear Not!"

the Zionist activities in a dozen
countries, the United States
included. There will be a ter-
rifying shock for many readers
) to be reminded that the Zionist
movement had very little sup-
port in the century's early
years, that Zionist member-
ship enrollment was as few as
12,000 in 1914, even in the
years when Louis D. Brandeis
was among the movement's

chief leaders, and included
Stephen S. Wise and their
associates. But the movement
grew fast and American
\, Zionists became world leaders
who as much, if not more than

their associates worldwide,
were the architects of the
Jewish state of Israel.
The conflicts as well as the
progressive steps in state-
building are outlined by Dr.
Ackerman, including the inner
struggle, the Brandeis-
Weizmann dispute and other
> occurrences.
Dr. Ackerman indicated how
the Holocaust and the rebirth
of the State of Israel absorbed
the negations and the vast
majority of American Jews

- affiliated with the Zionist
movement. In his analysis, Dr.
Ackerman deplores the early
indifference and he points to
- the great achievements that
could have been attained with
a Jewish activism by stating:

That the largest and weal-
/
thiest Jewish community in
the world failed in its sup-
port of the Zionist idea for so
long was unfortunate in
many respects. It is possible
that if its support had been
\-1 more timely and forthcom-
ing, a Jewish state in Eretz
Yisrael would have already
\– arisen in the years between
the two world wars. The

funds, political influence,
and perhaps the immigrants
American Jewry could have
contributed to the Zionist
cause were sorely lacking at
this critical period in Zionist
affairs and the development
of the Yishuv (pre-state
Jewish community in Eretz
Yisrael).
To assure acquisition of as
extensive a knowledge of
Zionist and Jewish history, Dr.
Ackerman dealt extensively
with a Russian challenge
under the title: "Birobidzhan
— a 'Jewish State' Without
Jews."
It isn't often that a textbook
for children becomes a valu-
able history teaching instru-
ment. Dr. Ackerman's Selected
Chapters in the History of
Zionism does just that. Schools
in this country should add its
study to their curricula, this
encouraging readership for it
by parents as well as children.

Israel Develops
New Mushroom

Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel is
exporting secrets to the peo-
ple's Republic of China — how
to produce a new variety of
mushroom that is tastier
than all others, Yediot
Achronot reported last week.
The exporter reportedly is
a kibbutz in Upper Galilee
which invested US $300,000
to develop the special mush-
room. Negotiations with
Chinese buyers have been
under way for several months,
Yediot Achronot
said.
Australia and Latin Ameri-
can countries are also
reported to be interested.
