MIRRORED BIRO DOORS "YOUR DOORS" $6900 up Soviet Refuseniks Fast For Human Rights New York (JTA) — More than 100 refuseniks were scheduled to participate.in a day of fasting throughout the Soviet Union last week as a gesture of solidarity with Jewish Prisoners of Con- science, according to the Na- tional Conference on Soviet Jewry (NCSJ). Supporters in other countries were expected to fast along with them. The refuseniks have formed what they call The Associa- tion of Israeli Citizens Who Are Living in the USSR 'Ibm- porarily Against Their Will. The refuseniks intend to send letters to Soviet authorities demanding the POCs' release. The informal network be- gan two years ago in Lenin- grad with a handful of members who expressed the desire to be repatriated to their homeland, Israel. They all claim Israeli citizenship. The group reportedly in- cludes a large number of refuseniks. Among those par- ticipating in the fast are Irma Begun, wife of POC Iosif Begun, and their son Boris. Iosif Begun, was a Moscow Hebrew teacher and Jewish activist who first applied to emigrate to Israel in April 1971. He is currently serving a 12year term in Chistopol Prison for "anti-Soviet agita- tion" that consists of seven years' imprisonment and five years' internal exile. On Erev Chanukah last week, 32 Soviet Jewish ac- tivists in Moscow sent greet- ings to Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir and Israeli President Chaim Herzog, equating the fight of the Mac- cabees with the Soviet Jews' fight for religious freedom. According to copies of the messages, sent to the Michigan Friends of the Soviet Jewry Federation and Information Center, 130 persons in the Soviet Union took part in a one-day hunger strike on Dec. 24 to dramatize the plight of Soviet Jewish refuseniks. Seventy persons gathered in one Moscow apartment to hear presentations on the history of the Soviet Jewry movement. Two employees of the U.S. Em- bassy in Moscow were also pre- sent, and telegrams were sent to Soviet leader Mikhail Gor- bachev demanding the release of Prisoners of Zion.
