EWISH N THIS ISSUE 50c SERVING DETROIT'S JEWISH COMMUNITY JANUARY 2, 1987 Michigan Hillel To Rebuild Hill St. Year-long project to remodel Jewish headquarters at the University of Michigan ALAN H1TSKY News Editor Jewish leaders in Detroit and Ann Arbor have raised $1 million toward a $3 million goal to begin a major re- modeling and expansion next summer of the B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation at the University of Michigan. Hillel, which now serves an esti- mated 1,500 students each week in its film, lecture, religious and classroom programs, is planning to expand its 22,000 square feet of space at 1429 Hill Street to 35,000 square feet. Hillel di- rector Michael Brooks told The Jewish )- , News that the present facility is aging and becoming increasingly expensive to repair. Hillel will be forced to move out of its facility for at least a year during the remodeling. Alternative space for offices, Hillel classes and religious of- ferings have not yet been arranged, but many of Hillel's most popular film and speaker series are held at larger campus sites, and will continue to be held outside Hillel after the new facility is completed. The Vatican has prohibited O'Connor from meeting with Israeli heads of state in Jerusalem.
