LUBAVITCH CHANUKAH PROGRAM LET THERE BE LIGHT HOUGHTON home during the three daytime sessions. Maddin added that, for workers reaching out to the community, explaining the needs and the many human services funded by the Cam- paign, an evening of musical entertainment and refresh- ments will be well deserved. Super Sunday will begin at 9:30 a.m., with each shift run- ning 2 hours and 45 minutes. To volunteer, call Leonard Milstone at the Jewish Welfare Federation, 965-3939. Two To Study. Refugee Situation DAVID HOLZEL Staff Writer A n Ann Arbor syna- gogue has decided to investigate the flow of Central American refugees into the United States first hand. Eve Mokotoff and Janet Landman of Temple Beth Emeth will leave Sunday for Harlington, Tex. on the Mexi- can border for an eight-day border witness program. The two will join Jews from Madi- son, Wis., Seattle, Wash., and San Francisco, Calif. in visits to a detention center, talks with representatives of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service and meetings with lawyers, mem- bers of the United Farmwor- kers Union and asylum appli- cants. The issue of Central Ameri- cans fleeing their homeland's for political reasons is a press- ing one for Americans living along the U.S.' southern bor- der, said Mokotoff. Refugees from countries friendly to the United States — like El Sal- vador and Guateinala — are systematically denied entry in violation of U.S. laws, she charged. Mokotoff and Landman's Texas visit is an attempt to raise the consciousness of Michiganians to the refugee problem. Why should a temple pick this issue on which to expend so much time and energy? Said Mokotoff: "We see refugee is- sues as very much a Jewish is- sue. I don't think it could be more obvious than that." For the members of Temple Beth Emeth, the Central American 'refugees are echoes of Jews who fled Nazi Germany and were denied a haven. Following the border wit- ness program, the congrega- tion will decide on concrete steps to take. One possibility, Mokotoff said, is to give asylum to a refugee family. "The problem is we don't have • any space in our synagogue to house them," she explained. The two plan to speak and give slide presentations on the witness program, she says. for details call headquarters Tuesday, 12/30 IONIA Ionia Temporary Facility Riverside Correctional Facility "tight Student-Rabbis (paralleling the Eight Chanukah Lights) from the N.Y.
