ttorney Phil Neuman
said the best way to
meet new people is to
make contacts profes-
sionally and person-
ally. And he has practiced
what he preached.
Since coming to Detroit from
Milwaukee, Wis., three years
ago, Neuman got involved in
the B'nai B'rith Friendship
Singles. He was just a member
until last year, when he said he
saw the group "foundering,"
and "jumped in" to take over
the presidency.
His B'nai B'rith affiliation
has since expanded. He is an
adviser to Kishon AZA and re-
cording secretary of the B'nai
B'rith Metropolitan Detroit
Council. Neuman is no
stranger to B'nai B'rith. In
Milwaukee, he rose through
the B'nai B'rith Youth Organ-
ization ranks as president of
Bereshis Chapter and vice
president of District 6 AZA.
Why is he so involved with
B'nai B'rith? It all stems from
his AZA days. "I really enjoyed
my AZA experience. I thought
it was fantastic and I want to
make sure that teenagers here
in Detroit are able to get the
same sort of experience. So I've
pretty much devoted a lot of
time to Kishon AZA, to Michi-
gan Region BBYO and I'm hop-
ing that that will pay off."
But Neuman's activities are
not limited to B'nai B'rith. He
also is a member of three com-
mittees of the Oakland County
Bar Association and its speak-
ers bureau and is a volunteer

for the Oakland County Youth
Assistance Program.
In his spare time, which he
says is limited, Neuman plays
racquetball, where he admits,
he can hold 'his own. He also
takes a sign language class in
order to communicate with
hearing-impaired clients.
Socially, Neuman attends
singles dances and programs
and urges other singles to par-
ticipate as well. "You've got to
keep going to these events. You
may meet someone who will in-
troduce you to the right person.
It's just a matter of hanging in
there."
Neuman said there is an un-
fortunate stigma attached to
being single, going to singles
events and answering personal
ads, and he would like to see
that change. "People have a
negative impression of singles
groups and advertising or per-
sonal ads and there shouldn't
be that sort of stigma. I guess I
wish that more people would
try to go to a singles event of
any sort. Give it a shot. If you
don't like it, that's fine."
A graduate of the University
of Wisconsin where he earned a
B.A. degree in political science
and the U-W law school, where
he earned a J.D. degree,
Neuman came to Detroit to join
his cousin's law practice. He
specializes in litigation and
real estate and handles trial,
divorce and probate work as
well.

Does he have any advice for
his unmarried peers who want
to meet new people? "Each per-
son has to develop his own
style. Whatever is best for you
is what you should do. They
key is to try." 0
