And 12 Mile at 1-696 8 Friday, December 26, 1986 _ THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 355 1000 Alicia Nelson has returned to her Hillel classroom after the DeLorean trial. Question Remains For DeLorean Juror ALAN HITSKY News Editor A licia Nelson describes the John DeLorean embezzlement trial as "walking carefully down a long dark corridor, only to stumble at the end." A Hillel Day School teacher and wife of Rabbi David Nelson of Cong. Beth Shalom, Mrs. Nelson had mixed emotions about the celebrated case and its con- troversial ending last week. DeLorean was accused of, embezzling $8.5 million from investors in his defunct auto- mobile company in Ireland. The nine-week case ended in acquittal and then confusion over U.S. District Judge Julian Cook's instructions to the jury. Mrs. Nelson was among three jurors who were con- vinced of DeLorean's guilt, but voted for acquittal because of the judge's instructions. "When we asked for new in- structions," she told The Jewish News, "we were told to refer again to the written in- structions he had already given us." The only relevant section referring to unanimous agreement, led the three jorors to go along with the majority and vote for acquittal. The jurors, she said, did not realize they had the option of remain- ing deadlocked, which would - resulted in a new trial. .. Nelson returned to her jun.. , high school level English classes at Hillel last Thursday, the day after the trial ended and just two days before the holiday vacation. "I'll need the two-week break just to get back in gear," she said. "I became kind of a celeb- rity" to the persons who knew she was a member of the jury, "and they couldn't wait for it to end so they could ask me about it. Now that it's over, I have a frustrating feeling because of the way it ended." ' She agreed with a fellow juror who told the media the disputed instructions "cheated us of our right to vote. That's just how I felt. Many of us had tried to strictly follow the rules." Mrs. Nelson's husband, David, even censored the daily newspapers for her, cutting out articles about the trial before Alicia saw them. The nine weeks of testimony had her leaning toward a not- guilty verdict of DeLorean. "I really didn't make up my mind," she said, "until the sec- ond day of deliberations. I felt he was innocent until I looked at all the documents - all the damning evidence." She was critical of several jurors who entered the verdict delibera- tions with the same belief, but refused to review the govern- ment's evidence in the case. Ultimately, "I think we probably did the right thing" in acquitting DeLorean. "I guess I'll never know. I'm just disap- pointing that we stumbled at the end." Band And Sundaes For Super Sunday The Jewish Welfare Federa- tion Young Adult Division is adding a new twist to the 1987 Allied Jewish Campaign Super Sunday telephone appeal Feb. 1 at the United Hebrew Schools. After hundreds of volunteers take a turn at the phones on behalf of the 1987 Campaign's more than 60 worldwide be- neficiaries, the division wil sponsor a telethon session from 6 to 8 p.m. highlighted by "old. ies but goodies" music by loyal dance band Rendezvois and ar ice cream bar. According to Diane J. Klein Super Sunday chairman wit!. Michael Maddin, the evening session will give volunteers f chance to reach those not al
