cisco, he said, so that Heifitz,
who has cancer, can be close to
her family who lives there.
Bogomolny's family lives in Is-
rael. The couple just received
an American passport to visit
Israel, he said.
He doesn't find America
strange after four decades in
the USSR, he said. "We were
visited by 500 tourists (in Mos-
cow), mostly from America, so I
know a lot of the life here."
He did marvel at the freedom
of movement across the
Detroit-Windsor border. "I
often saw, traveling in Russia,
the Turkish border. The free-
dom was so close to you," he
said emphatically.
Of his future plans,
Bogomolny will attend an in-
tensive English course at San
Francisco University. "I want
to study medicine," he said. "To
work and to live a normal life
at long last." He laughed after
saying it, perhaps realizing
that a normal life a possibility
now.
What does he think of the
Soviet's recent release a few
well publicized refuseniks?
"The Soviets are showing
that they're ready to trade
Jews." Trade Jews for what?
"They need a lot of things," he
said. "But I don't know if
America is ready to buy. At the
same time (the Soviets) put in
jail innocent people."
"It's important for Jews here
to remember that they have
brothers and sisters in the
Soviet Union and they can help
them. Sometimes there's a feel-
ing of 'What can I do? It seems
so far.' It's not so far," he said
assuringly. "It's the same
planet. Only 12 hours by
plane."
