About 200 people paid $1000 • per to enjoy a sumptuous cocktail and hors d'oeuvres buffet, dine lavishly in the six dining rooms, partake of des- serts, cheeses and fruits in sec- ond floor salons, after-dinner liqueurs oh the third floor and listen and dance to Kate Pat- terson and the Michael Zaporski orchestra. The former home of lumber king, David Whitney, Jr., was built in 1894 on what was then the outskirts of Detroit .. . with 42 rooms and 20 fire- places on onyx, marble and tile . stained glass, painted silk tapestries and beautiful wood carvings throughout. Detroit's newest and cer- tainly most elegant restaurant was provided to MCF by Richard and Linda Kuhn, Ron Fox and John McCarthy . . proceeds from the evening went directly to support Michigan Cancer Foundation's programs and research. Paul and Helen had ex- pressed a keen desire in 1985 to contribute to cancer research . and knew it required much more funding ... they estab- lished the Angels, a group of dedicated people who support MCF by donating $2,000 per year ... 86 people joined im- mediately. We had dinner in David Whitney Jr.'s former study, di- rectly under a huge, imposing portrait of him . . . only four ta- bles, but said to be his favorite room . 2. Other dining areas at The Whitney are Reception Sa- lon, Drawing Room, Library, Music Room and Dining Room. This was one of Michigan Cancer Foundation's finest hours ... so wonderful to have Paul's wife Helen and their son Norbert on hand to. see it . Paul was probably there, too. GET WELL WISHES . . . to Frances Weinberg . . . in Room 2708 at Sinai Hospital ... Our son Scott's former teacher at Pepper School in Oak Park (she was also at Roosevelt) broke her hip but has de- veloped other complications . . . Frances is the popular book reviewer at main branch of Jewish Community Center. HAVE A GOOD TIME New Year's Eve . and don't worry about the youngsters... There's an overnight party for those 3 to 12 at Rich Shaye's Place For Kids in Birmingain . His new Farmington Hills locale is open ... but not for New Year's Eve. WHERE THEY ARE ... Rhoda Weiss . . . 224 Royal Palm Way, Apt 5, Palm Beach, Fla. 33480 ... 305-659-6861. CONGRATS ... to Elaine and George Maskin . . . on their 40th anniversary. WHEN SAUL SILVERS- TEIN, local dentist, gets in- vited to parties and other social events, he usually winds up in the corner giving advice to people too busy to go to their own dentist . . . Neighbors pop in on him, friends call at all hours in pain, and people stop Saul at the supermarket for second opinions and answers to their dental questions. So he decided to set up a specific time during the week to give out free advice . . . Folks can phone his "Dentist on Call" every Tuesday and Thursday between one and two p.m. . . . at no charge . . . and talk di- rectly with Saul, who'll take the time necessary to answer questions and offer his profes- sional insight .. . LITTLE MARILYN STOVER, six years old, was heartbroken when her pet ca- nary died . . . To pacify her, dad Max Stover, gave Marilyn an empty cigar box and, with much ceremony, assisted in burying the box in the back yard . . . "Daddy," whispered little Marilyn, after the fun- eral was over, "do you think my canary will go to Heaven?" .. . Max said he was certain it would, and wondered why she asked . . . "I was only thinkin," murmured the youngster, "how angry God will be when he opens the box and finds it isn't cigars after all." FAVORITE FUNNY TALE ... sent to us by Gerry Brusen . about a huge 'air- liner, with all its seats occu- pied, zooming over the state in- sane asylum, and the pilot bursting into loud laughter .. . "What's so funny?' asked the hostess ... "I was just think- ing," replied the pilot, "what a commotion there'll be in tha joint when they discover I've escaped!" ' CHILDREN'S CORNER . .. Suzan Lieb, 4-year-old daughter of Jack and Irene Lieb, is a fiend for puppet shows ... Last week, Jack told her to get off the cold floor in the recreation room and little SUzie replied, "Put the strings on me!" SORRY WE COULDN'T GET to Pontiac to .see swear- ing in ceremony of new Circuit Court Judge Jessica Cooper... a great addition to this judicial bench. OUR DEPARTMENT OF Aversion and Disgust ... re- acts vigorously at times to cer- tain kinds of uses of Yiddish dialict stories . . . We certainly don't mean the Molly Goldberg type, where intonation, as dis- tinguished from dialect, was employed with warmth ... We mean the emcee or night club performer on radio or TV disc jockey whose good taste is as limited and crippled as his humor . . . To our way of think- ing, Jewish humor does not mean the belittling of tradi- tions that Jews honor ... The atmosphere would be a lot nicer if some of these comics would realize that the yaks they crave ought not to be bought. , ^;••=mrgrssawswe nu,..,. :
