Jerusalem (JTA) — The Ab-
sorption Ministry released
figures last week indicating
that 19 percent of Israelis in
the 18 to 29 age group are
likely to emigrate. The
tendency toward yerida drop-
ped to nine percent in the 30
to 49 age group, but overall
the propensity of israelis to
leave the country is alarming.
Yossi Kochik, who heads
the Ministry's department
for the prevention of yerida,
said he is initiating a new
project to encourage yordim
— Israelis living permanent-
ly abroad — to return home in
time for Israel's 40th anniver-
sary celebrations in 1988. He
said the project would focus
on finding them appropriate
jobs.
A recent survey indicated
that 92 percent of the public
believes yerida is harmful.
About 34 percent thinks the
main reason for it is employ-
ment problems; 16 percent
said the cause was unsatisfac-
tory living standards; 14 per-
cent blamed the security
situation; and 11 percent at-
tribute yerida to the waning
of the Jewish-Zionist identity
of Israel.

Candidates Fail
Rio de Janeiro (JTA) — At
least four outspoken anti-.
Israel candidates were de-
feated in the national and state
elections held November 15,
according to the final results
just published. One of them is
•Pastor Elias Boaventura,
former head of the Methodist
University in Piracicaba, Sao
Paulo State.
Boaventura signed an
agreement earlier this year
with Palestine Liberation
Organization representative
Farid Silwan to introduce
courses at the university on the
PLO's struggle against Israel.
The courses were a failure, at-
tracting only a dozen students.
So was Baventurh's bid for a
seat in the Sao Paulo Legisla-
tive Assembly. He garnered
few votes.
Coach Burned
Jerusalem (JTA) — Police
have no clues as to the ar-
sonists who destroyed a be-
loved artifact on public display
here for nearly 20 years - the
black 19th-century carriage
which the famous Anglo-
Jewish statesman and philan-
thropist, Sir Moses Montefiore,
used during his frequent visits
to the Holy Land more than
100 years ago. There is specu-
lation, but no proof, that the
arson was the work of Palesti-
nian nationalists related to the
recent unrest in the West Bank
and East Jerusalem.
