Yossel said it was due to today being the first day of the Twentieth Cen- tury. I didn't understand him, today was no different than yesterday or the day before. My best friend was Wanda, whom I loved very much. We played together everyday, all day long, except for Saturdays and Sundays. On Saturday, I went to the synagogue with my mother, sisters and brothers. On Sunday, Wanda went to church with her family. It was Chanukah. A few months earlier the war be- tween Russia and Japan had come to an end. Men who had been conscripted were return- ing to their families; others were not to return. To dissuade the people from blaming the Czar for their loss, rumors were spread that the Jews had lost the war. The Jews were ac- cused of exploitation, provid- ing inferior war goods, draft avoidance and other crimes against the government. The day was cloudy and dreary. Late in the afternoon, men carrying clubs, picks, chains and torches began to gather in the field across the road from our house. Shmuel and our brothers, joined by the husbands of our sisters, three cousins and two neighbors, stationed them- selves in front of our homes, Ben Lipson is a Southfield accountant. armed with poles and staves. My sister said the hostile force aligned against us numbered 50. "On this day of Chanukah," Shmuel said, "remember that Judah Maccabee and his brothers repelled and defeated a larger force of the Romans; and with the help of God, we will do the same." Across the way I spied Wanda, at the edge of the crowd of angry men, who were calling out insults and threats to my brothers. Calling out to Men carrying clubs, picks, chains and torches began to gather across from our house. Wanda, I ran out to meet her, even as she ran toward me. We met in the road and began to play our favorite games. We had played for some time, not noticing that it had gotten dark and that torches had been lit. Suddenly, I heard my mother scream, "Shandel, Shandel." I heard the sound of feet running towards me. At the same time, we heard Mrs. Grabowski scream Wanda's name. Our mothers reached us at the same time. I was picked up, my face pressed to a bosom, and I could feel my captor hurrying to the safety of our camp. When I was set down, I looked for my brothers, but they were not to be seen — the woman holding me was Wanda's mother. ,t I Not All Israeli News Makes The Headlines The BLIlVI SP CARL ALPERT Special to The Jewish News T 50°/0-70°/0 OFF ALL NAME BRANDS • • • • Vertical Blinds Levolor Blinds Pleated Shades Wood Blinds 21728 W.
