U.S Government
To Probe
Racist Groups

Denver (JTA) — The Anti-
Defamation League of B'nai
B'rith last week welcomed
media reports that white
supremacist groups, includ-
ing those linked to the
murder of Denver radio talk-
show host Alan Berg, are
under federal investigation at
grand jury proceedings in
Fort Smith, Arkansas.
Saul Rosenthal, director of
ADL's Mountain States
Regional Office in Denver,
called this development "an
extremely important step in
bring the Berg murderers to
account for their heinous
crime:'
ADL had written to
William Bradford Reynolds,
head of the U.S. Justice
Department's Civil Rights
Division, urging federal in-
vestigation of the Berg
murder and offering the
resources of the ADL to
assist in the investigation.
Rosenthal also said that
ADL Was disappointed that
the Denver District Attorney,
Norman Early, perceives that
there is insufficient evidence
at this time to file murder
charges under Colorado law.
The lack of prosecution,
Rosenthal said "may create a
powerful message from
Denver — that a gang of neo-
Nazi thugs can murder an in-
nocent man and get away
with it:'

New Yoi.k — The American
Jewish Congress says it is
"dismayed" by the refusal of
the federal government to
grant refuge to those fleeing
from violence and terror in
such countries as El Salvador
and Guatemala and wants it to
ease its restriction.
A resolution passed by the
organization's governing
council said the government's
policy "routinely denies" polit-
ical asylum "in disregard of
humanitarian considerations."
The resolution, released by
Theodore R. Mann, president
of AJCongress, accused the
United States of violating the
United Nations Protocol to the
U.N. Convention Relating to
the Status of Refugees, to
which it was a signatory.
