ecently a doctor's wife
and mother of four
children was told by
her rabbi to go home and get
ready for Chanukah by buying
presents for all four children
for each of the eight nights.
Quick arithmetic told her four
times eight equals 32. Thirty-
two presents to buy! The rabbi
caught the look on her face and
said to her, "Well, you have to
do something to combat
Christmas, don't you?"
What the rabbi meant to
convey was his feeling that
Jewish children want a holiday
near Christmastime which
would give them the same
exitement and pleasure that
Christian children find in
Christmas. Should Jewish
children be cheated out of the
Christmas story or the
Christmas tree or the visit of
Santa Claus? So, now we have
the "Chanukah bush" and the
"Chanukah man" as some
Jewish parents try to convert
Chanukah into a Jewish
Christmas.
The truth is, Chanukah isn't
a Jewish Christmas. It never

has been. It never can be. They
are two altogether different
kinds of holidays which both
happen to fall on the 25th day
of the month. Christmas is Dec.
25, Chanukah the 25th day of
Kislev in the Hebrew calendar.
Sensitive Christians complain
that Christmas has been com-
mercialized . beyond descrip-
tion. But now suburban stores
near Jewish homes are filled
with Chanukah advertising,
Chanukah gifts, Chanukah
greeting cards, Chanukah
home decorations. Chanukah
has been so commercialized
that the message and meaning
of Chanukah has almost been
lost.
The Maccabees of the
Chanukah story left a legacy of
religious liberty that is sorely
needed in our times. The right
of a group to maintain its reli-
gious convictions, to keep in-
tact its religious and cultural
uniqueness, anticipated by
nearly 20 centuries the gener-
ation of American revolu-
tionaries who believed that
"rebellion against tyrants is
obedience to God." Resistance
against enforced spiritual re-
gimentation, whether against
compulsory Hellenization as in
the days of the Maccabees, or
against narrow Church dogma
as in the days of the medieval
Inquisition, or against Soviet
