Abrams Meets
With President
Of Rumania

New York (JTA) — Ruma-
nian President Nicolae
Ceausescu was urged, during
a private meeting last week in
Bucharest with a prominent
American Jewish leader, to
convey to the Soviet Union
"the lesson of the Rumanian
experience" with regard to
Jewish emigration.
Morris Abram, chairman of
the Conference of Presidents
of Major American Jewish
Organizations and chairman
of the National Conference on
Soviet Jewry, met with the
Rumanian leader at the
beginning of this month for a
meeting that lasted more
than two hours. He also met
with Minister for Foreign Af-
fairs Ioan Ibtu and Minister
of Cults Ion Cumpanacsu.
Abrams said, in a special
interview, that Rumania, a
Socialist state, should serve
as a "model" to the Soviets
and other East European
states, for the way it has been
handling the Jewigh com-
munity and the effect it has
had on its relations with the
United States. Abram noted
that of a past Jewish popula-
tion of 390,000, only 25,000
Jews are now in Rumania.
"The rest were permitted to
emigrate and mainly went to
Israel," he said.

Police Search
Two Yeshivahs

Jerusalem (JTA) —
Jerusalem police carried out
searches Dec. 19 in two
yeshivahs for weapons or in-
cendiary material. The swoop
followed the arrest Dec. 18 of
Moshe Shilgi of Shuva Banim
yeshivah, in the Moslem Quar-
ter, on suspicion of possible in-
volvement both in attacks on
Arabs and in burning of bus
stops in the capital.
Police sources indicated
there could well be a connec-
tion between these two series
of recent crimes.
The two yeshivahs searched
were Shuvu Banim and the
Diaspora Yeshivah. The police
took away a large amount of
material, whose nature they
did not disclose.
Shuvu Banim is the
yeshivah which the late Eliahu
Hmedi attended before he was
stabbed by an Arab assailant
last month.
