USSR Provides SS Card
In Demjanjuk Trial
Tel Aviv (JTA ► — The
Soviet Union last week pro-
vided Israel with the original
Nazi SS identity card issued
to Ivan Demjanjuk, the alleg-
ed war criminal being held in
Ramie prison pending trial,
possibly next month. Dem-
janjuk Americanized his first
name to John when he be-
came an American citizen in
1958. He was extradited to
Israel last February.
Israel requested the orig-
inal identity card because the
photocopy of the card in its
possession was considered in-
sufficient evidence to present
in court. The original was ob-
tained through what were
described as indirect channels
to the Moscow authorities. It
was given to Nimrod Novik,
Foreign Minister Shimon
Peres' political advisor, who
handed it over the Attorney
General Yosef Harish.
But the card contains
discrepancies which could
raise difficulties in identify-
ing Demjanjuk as the 111.e-
blinka death camp guard
known by inmates as "Ivan
the Terrible" for his extreme
brutality.
It bears a photograph on
one side and personal and
physical details on the other.
The latter include a scar on
his back which the Ramle jail
authorities have identified on
the prisoner's back. But the
card certifies that the bearer
was a guard at the Sobibor
prison whereas the charge
sheet against Demjanjuk
refers to crimes committed at
Treblinka.
There is also a five-cen-
timeter difference between
Demjanjuk's height and the
height listed on the card.
Demjanjuk's American at-
torney, Mark O'Connor, im-
mediately attacked the card
as a Soviet forgery intended
to implicate the Ukrainian-
born Demjanjuk in war
crimes for reasons of their
own.
Demjanjuk, 66, a former
resident of Cleveland, Ohio,
was stripped of his U.S.
citizenship and is the first
alleged Nazi war criminal to
be extradited to Israel to
stand trial.

24 Friday, December 26, 1986 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
W. Bloomfield
Maple & Orchard Lake Rd.
(INSIDE THE ORCHARD MALL)
ooking ahead to 1987,
there are a number of
headlines Israel's
friends would probably love
to see. With tongue in cheek
we offer a sampling:
"No Israeli Involvement
Whatsoever In Iranian Arms
Scandal"
"Congress Forgives All of
Israel's Debt and Doubles
Aid"
"500,000 Jews to Leave
Soviet Union — Gorbachev
Says They Were Trouble
Makers Anyway"
"Abu Nidal Renounces Ter-
rorism — To Become Boy
Scout Troop Leader"
"Washington Post Bought
Out By Jerusalem Post"
More realistic than the
above are a number of de-
velopments we can expect.
Given its new members,
there should be stronger sup-
port in the new 100th Con-
gress for closer United
States-Israel ties. An initia-
tive to reduce Israel's debt
repayments to the United
States is likely with the im-
petus behind this move being
that the interest payments on
old foreign military sales
loans roughly equal the total
economic portion of the aid
Israel has been receiving in
recent years. The reduced
rate would be closer to cur-
rent lower interest rates and
the saving to Israel would be
hundreds of millions of dol-
lars.
The Congress can also be
expected to seek greater con-
trol over the sale of modern
U.S. arms to Israel's foes by
enacting new legislation. On
the basis of legislation al-
ready enacted in 1986, it
should be easier for Israeli
firms to sell their products to
the Pentagon and engage in
joint projects. The signifi-
cance to Israel's economy of
defense-oriented sales will
continue. Along these lines, a
decision early in the year is
expected as to whether Israel
will go into full-scale produc-
tion of its Lavi fighter-
bomber. The way in which
this decision is made, as well
as the final outcome will to a
large extent determine future
defense relationships between
Israel and the United States.
Negative fallout from Is-
raeli involvement in the
Iran-Contra arms affair
should hopefully be minimal.
The multiple investigations
here will undoubtedly focus
on the Reagan Administra-
tion's actions rather than the
participation of a growing
cast of characters.
Finally, given its political
activism, the American
Jewish community can an-
ticipate being actively
courted by presidential can-
didates of both parties based
on their support for Israel. In
this context it is always pref-
erable to be pandered to than
ignored.
