Children love to celebrate it.
But the holiday is not just for

phasized this eternal truth.
When Joseph went looking for
his brothers pasturing their
flocks and was asked what he
was looking for, he replied, "I
seek my brothers." All of us
seek our brothers. At this
Chanukah season, we seek to
rededicate ourselves to our
brothers, our fellow Jews,
whether they be in North
America, the USSR or in Is-
rael. Wherever they live, they
are our brothers who celebrate
this week the festival of
Chanukah.

Tasty Melons
Developed

New York — A Bar-Ilan
University plant pathologist,
in collaboration with Ameri-
can, Indian and Japanese col-
leagues, has produced a new
type of mildew-resistant can-
taloupe that could save far-
mers throughout the world
millions of dollars now spent
on fungicides to permit com-
mercial cultivation of the me-
lon.
Though seeds for the
newly-developed, mildew-
resistant cantaloupe have
been used in cross-breeding
research by others — they
were discovered more than 40
years ago in Calcutta, India
by U.S. Department of Ag-
riculture scientists — it was
Dr. Yigal Cohen of Bar-Ilan
and his colleagues who iso-
lated the resistance factors
that enabled them to produce
melons that taste good. Ear-
lier experiments with this
seed had resulted in a melon
that was bitter and not fit for
human consumption.
"Our research must always
take the consumer into con-
sideration," Dr. Cohen said.
