Battle Of Indulge:
Holiday Dieting

FLORINE MARK

This holiday season is
going to be filled with every-
thing you love to do — see
old friends, meet new friends,
travel, dance, ski and eat and
eat and eat! What are you
doing instead of planning
your schedule to fit in all the
festivities! You find yourself
out shopping for new clothes
— a size larger — for after
the holidays!
This doesn't have to be.
You can go to everything,
enjoy everything, especially
the good food and drink and
not gain a pound. The recipe
is simple. All it takes is a lit-
tle know-how, an extra ounce
of control and a sizable por-
tion of planning.
The first principle of
weight maintenance and
weight loss is a simple chem-
ical formula, H2O. Water can
help you enjoy every aspect of
your holiday festivities and
still maintain your shape. It
is inexpensive, and readily
available wherever you are.
It is healthy (nature's own
diuretic) and filling. For
those of you who wish to feel
pampered, buy yourself a
case of Perrier to last the
season.
Drink lots of water. Keep a
glass handy at all times: at
work; at home; before every
meal; before embarking on
any social event. You will be
putting a curb on your appe-
tite.
When I go to a party, I try
whatever foods appeal to me.
I try it, taste it, and then
selectively choose what I
want to eat. If something
looks good, but tastes bad, I
won't waste the calories.
Further, If something tastes
good, whatever it is, from
soup to nuts, I'll eat it if I
want, but in normal to small
portions.
You must learn to be asser-
tive in any eating situation if
you are going to come out a
winner. A simple and polite
"no thank you" or "yes, this
is all I am going to have,"
will do the trick. Remember
its your choice and your body.
Don't get defensive and don't
be apologetic for wishing for
yourself what you would wish
for your best friend — to look
and feel the best you can.
Remember, you are your own
best friend. Truly, the taste
of the first mini-egg roll
won't be any different than
the taste of the 20th, al-
though the effects of eating
20 could be disastrous.

Florine Mark is president
and chairman of the board of
the Weight Watchers Group,
Inc.

Variety and choice makes ev-
erything in life more interest-
ing.
Discover some foods you
should make friends with to
support you through difficult
moments. These are foods
which you can safely eat in
larger portions and not gain
weight. Some example of
these foods are: fresh or
cooked vegetables; wine
spritzers (with lots of ice);
broiled fish or poultry (both
are great with a twist of le-
mon); fresh or cooked fruit;
unsalted popcorn; diet pop.
I could go on to give you
pages and pages of low-
calorie foods or recipes and
hundreds of self-management
tips. I prefer, though, to get
right to the bottom line and
share with you what really
helps me the most to enjoy
each and every minute of the
holidays and still maintain
my own self-control, drink
my water, make good choices
and .stay on track: focus on
the "reason for the season."
Would there be Thanksgiv-
ing without turkey and
pumpkin pie? Can we still
celebrate Chanukah without
potato latkes? And will the
New Year still come without
champagne and caviar? There
is only one correct answer to
these hypothetical questions,
and that is without exception,
yes. Having a good time is
not stuffing yourself with
food, but filling yourself with
hours of fun and surrounding
yourself with family and
friends with whom you've al-
ready shared many years and
lots of love.
