Burial Society Marks
Its 70th Anniversary
The Hebrew Benevolent
Society, the Detroit Jewish
chevrah
community's
kadishah — burial society —
celebrated its 70th anniver-
sary this week.
Founded in 1916 by a
group of individuals led by
Samuel Sandweiss, the
society was created to make
sure a decent burial is avail-
able to every Jew, no matter
what his financial situation.
The society began in head-
quarters on Brewster and
Fredrick Streets in Detroit,
moving in 1930 to Joy Road
and Linwood. In 1964, the
society moved to its present
location on Greenfield Road
in Oak Park, under the name
of Hebrew Memorial Chapel,
a full-service Jewish funeral
home.
Rabbi Israel I. Rockove has
been its executive director
since 1950, and Alan H.
Dorfman, manager and fun-
eral director since 1967.
The funeral home's affiliate
cemetery is Hebrew Memo-
rial Park, supervised by
Michael H. Hochheiser.
The society has a member-
ship of 3,500 and board of 60.
Current officers are: Hillel L.
Abrams, president; Samuel P.
Havis and Milton Oleinick,
vice presidents; Louis P. To-
por, treasurer; Rabbi Eric
Greenbaum, secretary; Morse
Shiffman, Leonard Antel and
Rabbi Ernest E. Greenfield,
trustees; Edward Miller,
cemetery chairman; and
Rabbi Boruch E. Levin, assis-
tant executive director.
Hillel Boys Start
Cub Scout Dens
A Tiger Cub den (for first
graders with an adult) and
Cub Scout dens (for second
graders) have been formed for
boys attending Hillel Day
School.
Based at the main Jewish
Community Center in West
Bloomfield, the dens were or-
ganized by Jo Greene, the
Center's family services coor-
dinator in conjunction with
the Clinton Valley Boy Sc-
outs.
Assisting her were Jeff
Fishman, Gordon Schlom,
Barry Silver, Nancy Silver,
Lee Schonberg, Geoff Orley
and Barry Steinway.
For information and appli-
cations, call Ms. Greene,
661-1000, ext. 344.
