Detroit's Project Otzma
Recruits For 2nd Year

Project Otzma has begun
recruiting for its second year
in Israel.
Project Otzma (strength)
provides participants,. age
18-24, with an opportunity to
learn first-hand about Israel's
history, language, culture
and lifestyle. At the same
time, it deepens their under-
standing through contact
with peers and "adoption" by
Israeli families.
Under the auspices of the
Jewish Welfare Federation
and funded in part by United
Jewish Charities and the
Jewish Agency for Israel, the
one-year fellowship begins in
August 1987.

Jonathan Ross, a partici-
pant in this year's program
who attends the University of
Michigan, said his first three
months were divided between
intensive language study,
work and integration into the
social and cultural life of the
kibbutz.
In their fourth through
seventh months, participants
work on an agricultural
moshav, do civilian work at a
military base and get hands-
on experience at reforestation
camps and archeological
sites.
Suzanne Nussbaum, a stu-
dent at Michigan State Uni-
versity, said she worked in
banana fields. "It's a long
day, but I got a really great
feeling out of it."
The remaining five months
are devoted to public service

work in a Project Renewal
neighborhood.
In all, the volunteers will
live, learn and work in virtu-
ally every part of Israel. They
will also visit with leading
Israeli educators, politicians,
scientists, authors and ar-
tists.
Eric Berman, from the
University of Michigan, was
impressed with the candor of
Israeli leadership, generals
and cabinet ministers who
met with them. "Detailed an-
swers are frequently given to
questions usually considered
too political," said Berman.
Upon their return, the stu-
dents can serve the local
Jewish community by work-
ing at one of the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation's member
agencies, among others.

Youth Become
Torah Readers

The young Torah readers
group has been established at
Cong. B'nai Israel of West
Bloomfield.
A group of post-B'nai
mitzvah meet with Rabbi
Sherman Kirshner on a reg-
ular basis to become profi-
cient in Torah reading.
Recently, both Charles
Bletstein and David-Seth
Kirshner served as young
Torah readers.
