Continued from Page 3 TO name, Accmsouts, Wed.; Thurs., Frt. 10 - 9 HOURS: Mon., Tues., Sat. 10 - 5:30 I I Nu? cousin entertained her by reciting nursery rhymes. _ As I shuttled between my wounded bird and the phone, I was mildly embarrassed that the switchboard was aglow for us. Moreover, I was relieved. A medical emergen- cy, traumatic and frightening, was ripening into a family oc- casion, fueled by the fires of interconnection which Jews feel so extraordinarily. We are a people touched by tragedy, dogged by a history of real injury. Thus are we also a nation which exper- iences a collective respon- sibility for each other. "Everyone in Israel is respon- sible one for another," says the proverb. Thus are we never alone, never apart from a kinship community. I have always been touched by the affectionate way im- migrant Jews speak of a "landsman." My cousin Sam always puffs up his chest and glows from cheek to cherry cheek, to pronounce this or that person "mine cousin" or from "mine town" in Poland. Indeed, fifty years of .car._ wept in the arms of her "ship-schwester" with the tenderness of a real long-lost sister. Faith aside, we are a community of people who does not wait for God•to come to our aid. We are con- sciously, actively, and inten- tionally a family writ large. We are a tribe, a people, a nation. And from this traumatic experience of a Sunday after- noon, what will my daughter learn? She will probably learn greater respect for simple household toys. She will learn to depend on a family that loves and nurtures her. And some day, when she is older, I will teach her to ask the quintessential rabbinic ques- tion easily applied to any situation, "Nu? What do we learn from this?"
