\

THERE'S ALWAYS a first
time ... and taking over an
entire popular restaurant on
a Saturday evening has to be
very improbable.
But Lou and Lorraine Pop-
per are very special people
... and customers of Lou
especially have a very par-
ticular love for them.
This was the case recently
at Cafe Cortina on W. Ten
Mile west of Middlebelt
where owners Rina and Ad-
riano Tonon retained their
complete staff of employees
for the evening ... in an ex-
travagant celebration for
Kenneth and Lori Popper, re-
cently wed and returned from
ten days in Hawaii ... with
dog Stosh, who couldn't be at
the party this evening . . .
"doggone it" he says ... Invi-
tations even had Stosh's foot-
prints on them.
Cafe Cortina seats just 90
people, with reservations only
on Friday and Saturday
nights ... but Lou and Lor-
raine had more people than
that.
Only person who couldn't
be there, laments Lou, is a
cousin in Florida he says "re-
cently celebrated her born-
in-1933 birthday."
Claire and Mary Tamaroff,
Thelma and Sam Rodd,
Elizabeth McIntosh, dental
doc Elliot and Rita Folbe,
Benjie and Sarah Bersha,
Marge and Jerry Robbins,
Sophie and Sam Nemzin,
Sharon and Gene Scarpone,
Gigi Kemper of Alberto Rossi
Cosmetics with husband Al-
bert ... That's where she got
name of line ... hubby Al-
bert and son Ross ... Al and
Charmaine Shulman.
A proud mother and father
of the bride, Juanita and Ted
Nemzin, Scott Small, Doris
Moglovkin 27 years with Lou
at his Empire Packing, Sarah
and Sid Kay, Sam Lerman of
Ben & George's Deli in
Livonia, Pearl and Al Shap-
iro, Lea Lefkowitz, Sarah and
Harry Freeman.
Cafe Cortina Chef Paul
Tootikian 'made a beautiful
ice carving that stood on the
seafood table ... as a strol-
ling magician did card tricks
and mental readings ... with
accordianist Frankie Paul li-
vening up things with his
fine personality and music.
Such an array of food ...
hot hors d'oeuvres, crabmeat,
shrimp, lobster, sable, lox,
caviar, two types of pasta,
two chicken dishes, sauteed
scampi, veal piccante, lamb
chops, sweet sweet table and
Chef Paul making Spanish
coffee.
The waitpersons all wore
tuxedoes and white gloves ...
Young man who assisted us,
Ken Kedzierski, so very po-
lite, ultra efficient and ex-
tremely courteous, is the son
of Betty Kedzierski, who
many people will remember
from the former Standard
Club North on Northwestern
Hwy ... She is now with
Mark Stein at Mark of Excel-

lence Catering (Temple Is-
rael, etc.) ... Another son,
Steve, works in the kitchen
at Cafe Cortina.
Sure Stosh has a bone to
pick ... How come Chester
was there and he wasn't? ...
Sorry, Stosh, Chester is
Grandpa Lou's pet monkey
... but he ain't real ... Isn't
it better to be a real live dog
loved so much than a stuffed
ol' monkey ... Ouch! Chester
... naughty boy.
ARNIE FULLER, owner
of Little Professor in Oak
Park, has been most lucky to
many players of Michigan
Lottery and Lotto ... Re-
cently, a two-million dollar
winner came from his store.
Sol Lewis, director of
Michigan Metaphysics, over-
heard Arnie tell a customer a
sure way of their number
coming out ... He said,
"Write down your numbers
on a small piece of paper, fold
it real small and swallow it.
If it does not come out today,
it will tomorrow."
POTATO PEELING 'ike
you've never seen outside of a
restaurant ... That's what
happens at the annual
Chanuka party ... given by
Judy and Jack Nolish and
Wendy Robins and Terry
Brown ... It's number 16 this
year, 12 noon to 5 p.m. ... by
invite only ... at the Nolish
home in Huntington Woods.
RECENT CENTRAL
High School reunion, class of
1946, brought $2,142.44 ...
as gift to Children's Hospital
of Michigan.
TAMARA FRIEDMAN,
owner of Tamara Institute de
Beaute, was recently quoted
in a local publication ... with
the column dealing about
fond Christmas memories of a
number of prominent De-
troiters ... Tamara, who re-
lated how she bought a
Christmas tree the first De-
cember she was here from
Russia, says that in the
Soviet Union, an evergreen
tree is a symbol of winter and
the new year ...
In Russia, trees are not
unusual at Jewish homes ...
having nothing whatsoever to
do with religion ... Even the
local Orthodox rabbi where
she and husband Eugene
lived had a tree.
Tamara and Eugne were
completely unaware of the
religious aspect associated
with a tree ... and she says
since that first year, Tamara
and her family have dis-
covered the many Jewish
holidays and rituals of which
they were deprived.
CONGRATS ... to Harry
and Lottie Koltonow ... of
Boca Raton, Fla. ... on their
48th anniversary ... Also on
same date to his son barrister
Leonard and daughter-in-law
Barbara Anbender Koltonow
... plus the third anniver-
sary ... same date ... of
Harry's and Lottie's
grandchild, Mark Wasser-
man, and his wife, Beth ...
Magic date is Dec. 18.
