Astrologers believe that the New Age, or the Age of Aquarius, begins around the turn of the 21st century. The Age of Aquarius is expected to be holistic, egalitarian and humanita- rian. — Henry Winegarden, direc- tor of the New York School of Astrology It's a Friday evening in Gainesville, Fla., and Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi has come at a congregation's invitation to lead Shabbat services. A rainbow-colored tallit (prayer shawl) is draped over the large frame of this fatherly rebbe, who is sway- ing amidst the worshippers who surround him in concen- tric circles. He is leading a mantra, an incantation popular in Hin- duism and Mahayana Buddh- ism. But he replaces the tra- ditional "Om" with the more JeWish "Shal-Om." When the mantra is finished, he breaks into Lecha Dodi in the tune of Amazing Grace. Later, Schachter takes out his dulcimer to accompany the intermittently traditional and unfamiliar niggunirn, or wordless melodies. During the service, he refers to the Almighty alternately as male and female. At the conclu- sion, the concentric circles offer prayers for sending "he- aling energy" to friends, fam- ily, countries and the earth. Shabbat dinner lingers for hours, with Schachter inter- jecting stories of long de- ceased holy men and women, rabbis and peasants, all con- taining a message about the essence of Jewish tradition. For some 25 years, Schach- ter has been travelling to Jewish communities through- out the world to introduce Jews to some novel ways of encountering their tradition. And he is not the only one. In 1966, Shlomo Carlebach and his psychedelic Jews at the House of Love and Prayer in San Francisco began to welcome the Sabbath bride in a frenzy of dancing and sing- ing reminiscent of the 18th century Chasidim. The com- bination yeshiva/commune/ synagogue attracted a differ- ent kind of Jew. Some called it the Jewish counterculture. This counterculture has neither flourished nor fizzled in the two decades since Car- lebach and Schachter germi- nated the concepts of a Jewish renewal. Rather, the counterculture has attracted a modestly growing, intimate following. In 1986, these and other elements of the Jewish coun- terculture, also known as New Age Judaism or Aqua- Shlomo Carlebach: love and prayer rian Judaism, are entrenched in Jewish life, albeit some- what on the fringe. New Age Judaism has touched thousands of Jews in America and abroad. But the New Age is not concerned with numbers or outreach. It is concerned with spiritual renewal, a restora- tion of the spiritual elments which many disenchanted Jews found lacking in mod- ern religious practice. Although the New Age groups, which include chavurot, or small prayer groups, defy categorization, some common threads do connect the loosely organized movement. All stress egalitarianism between men and women, leaders and fol- lowers. They frown upon hierarchy, and most cultivate the mysti- cal, spiritual or tran- scendental nuances of the JeWish tradition, often incor- porating eastern traditions like meditation. The integra- tion of a political and social consciousness in ritual and spiritual are trademarks of the New Age Judaism. It is no coincidence that the decade of LSD, Hair and re- bellion gave birth to both Schachter's B'nai Or Reli- gious Fellowship in Philadel- phia and the Aguarian Mi- nyan of Berkeley, Calif., two of the pillars of New Age Judaism. While an entire generation of Americans challenged the values of the society around them, Jews did the same within their own societies. The left became synonymous with secularism in America, Europe and Israel. The spiritually interested looked to the East for guidance. In late 1960s and early '70s, Schachter, the Aquarian Jews' quintessential spiritual leader, Carlebach and others began manifesting the ideas of a Jewish renewal in books, minyanim and teachings. Carlebach brought to the movement his unique combi- nation of musical liturgy combined with his mystical tales. He has created liturgi- cal melodies used in worship throughout the world. After leaving the House of Love and Prayer, Carlebach di- vided his life between a commune in Israel with
