Although Jews did have to overcome quotas and prejudicial treatment in the past, this fact is not recog- nized by the civil rights movement. The final and probably most disturbing factor in the quest for upward mobility, is the decline of Jewish values in the home. Jews must re- main the "People of the Book” to insure our children's climb up the mobility ladder. Parents need to insist on maintaining the quality of the public schools which have contributed so much in the past to the success story of American Jews. Traditional Jewish values , must be main- tained through comprehen- sive Jewish education which emphasizes learning as well as justice and Jewish values. The Jewish home must re- main the fortress from within. Perhaps it is unrealistic to expect a never-ending cycle of upward mobility. However, it is certainly not inconceivable to expect a maintenence of the status quo. The very least we can accept is an attempt within the Jewish community to carry on the tradition of Jewish success and contribu- tions to American society. We as a community can no longer sit still while our life's blood is cajoled away by organizations that offer some- thing far less than what we have ourselves. We are different, we believe differ- ently, our customs are differ- ent and our heritage goes back over 5700 years. Some- thing no other people can claim. We must fight for our children and our families. We must learn, we must study and we must ask. With knowledge comes respect for who and what we are. „&-ori ∎ ,, In business 0%1E70 YEARS Between I0 Er I I Mile Roads :----A—mtAd with a organization we have a Ceu- dency of shying away rather than battling back. Why? In most cases it's a feeling of in- feriority. The person in front of you seems to know what he's talking about, and even though you realize how false most of the statements are, you don't have the ability to contradict what is being said. Our own lack of knowledge is our own downfall, not the missionaries from Jews for Jesus. Although the impact of the Jews for Jesus groups is marginal, the effect on our community through inter- marriage and assimilation has been far more devastat- ing. Our children don't leave on their own — they're bored away. Their unanswered questions and desires are an- swered by some other source rather then that within the family. No one steals our children — we give them away by forgetting why we are a family in the first place. Parents who cry about their children leaving the "Faith" always say something about sending their child to Hebrew School and giving them a great big bar/bat mitzvah. You never hear about lighting candles for Shabbat, or sharing a Satur- day morning aliyah at shul, or reading Midrash at bed- time, or struggling with He- brew vowels together, or learning how to put on a pair of tefilin. We seem to think that our children's Hebrew education ends in the classroom. There's no getting around it, being Jewish means that you have to do something. We are not a religion of blind faith.
