paid work in its Senior Adult
Workshop, a day program for
individuals with a varying
degree of needs. It is more
structured than volunteer
work and is located in the
agency's building. The main
focus of the program is work,
although a gentle geriatric
= conditioning program is per-
formed once a day during a
break period. A kosher hot
lunch is provided.
The work is piece work,
and the pay is on a piece rate
basis. The tasks are subcon-
tracted from businesses in

the community, and involve

such activities as collating
forms and packaging small
items. The work day is 4 1/2
hours long, one to four days a
week.
What does the workshop
mean to the participants?
Bella Bellow says she's been
coming four days a week for
two years, and she's very
happy to be there. "I like the
people here," she states, "and
it gets me out of my apart-
ment."
The JVS also offers job
placement service for all
ages, including the well el-
derly, who wish to work
part-time.
Volunteers can be found in
many other areas of Jewish
communal life. Sinai Hospital
has many seniors among its
regular volunteers. They per-
form diverse duties, including
Service With Love, which is a
relatively new program

alone, just to check on them
and make them feel less iso-
lated.
"We use the volunteers in
the emergency room; we use
them as volunteer patient
representatives who talk to
patients about their concerns;
they work in the gift shop
and in the family waiting
room," explains Pola Fried-
man, who has administrative
responsibility for the volun-
teers along with several other
programs. "I see the role of
the volunteer as a humaniz-
ing touch in a hospital, an
opportunity of softening the
bricks and hi-tech world,
something like a family
member. Patients are often
intimidated and scared to
talk to the staff in a hospital,
but will often feel more com-
fortable with the volunteers.
Perhaps they see them as
more approachable."
One senior who believes in
the idea of being usefully
active is Southfield resident
Anna Mickel, who describes
herself as being in the 65-75
age bracket. Heavily involved
in Jewish communal volun-
teer work and the seniors' ac-
tivism movement, Mickel
laughingly maintains she has
no time to worry over the
aches and pains of growing
older.
A typical week for her in-
cludes daily meetings of any
