Meese Says
U.S., Israel
Share Interests

New York (JTA) — U.S. At-
torney General Edwin Meese,
addressing more than 700
lawyers here last week,
stressed that Israel and the
United States share the same
interests and long-term objec-
tives which led to their col-
laboration in the sale of arms
to Iran.
"Israel has taken a long
view in looking at this and
has taken with us a strategic
approach of which Iran is a
very important piece," Meese
said at the Proskauer Award
Dinner of the UJA-Federa-
tion Lawyers Division.
"We share with Israel the
same objective and interests
as far as that region of the
world is concerned," Meese
said. He said the Reagan Ad-
ministration's objective was
"to influence Iran to rejoin
the family of responsible na-
tions, rather than plunge in-
to an abyss and a continua-
tion of the conduct we have
seen in the past."
The Attorney General
maintained that had the arms
sales been completed they
would have amounted to only
"one-tenth of one percent of
the arms that are currently
being supplied to Iran by
other countries" and that
Iranian contacts had offered
to work for the release of
American hostages held in
Lebanon.

Suspect Pleads
Guilty To
Terrorism

Aviv (JTA) — Fugitive
Gush Emunim member Ira
Rappaport pleaded guilty in
Jerusalem district court last
week to causing "serious
bodily harm" and member-
ship in a terrorist organiza-
tion, in connection with the
June 1980 car bombing that
severely injured former
Nablus Mayor Basam
Shakaa.
He was released on 10,000
Shekel (about US $6,500) bail
pending sentencing in 10
days. Rappaport, the only
suspected member of a Jew-
ish terrorist underground in
the West Bank to escape ar-
rest two years ago, was taken
into custody at Ben Gurion
Airport after returning to
Israel voluntarily from the
United States.
The "bodily harm" charge
was the result of plea bar-
gaining between the prosecu-
tion and Rappaport's lawyer,
Yaacov Weinroth. More ser-
ious charges against him were
dropped. Rappaport, who was
sent to the U.S. as a Gush
Emunin emissary, failed to
return to Israel when other
members of the Jewish
underground were brought to
trial.
