In my best bored and irritated mother's voice, I insisted, "C'mon, Frannie. It's no big deal." I learned a good deal about motherhood in this plunge from the swing. Frannie and I reached another plateau of relationship: dependence, trust, self-control, and the like. But, between the time I heard that thud • and the proud moment she emerged from the hospital with her broken wrist protected by a pristine, new cast, we had learned a lot about the func- tioning of a Jewish family. People complain there is no privacy in a Jewish family. Verbally excitable trans- plants from the high anxiety of Eastern Europe fare badly at the gentile skills of silent observation. Jewish family typically hold vocal opinions on eves your life. They subject your job, your hair, your clothes, car, friends, taste, and (especially) your weight to the grandest scrutiny. But what may seem like intrusion on any other day bears the palpable stamp of security in troubled times. Jews subscribe to the hard knocks lesson that life is fragile, that its protection re- quires vigilance. In the few minutes after our arrival at the local children's hospital, we were followed by a flood of family. Frannie sat in her grandfather's lap to reach the x-ray machine.
