Last week, Detroit's Jewish
communal workers were
forced to — quite literally —
take a stand for their values.
Educator Gerald Bubis, ap-
pearing at the annual Jewish
Welfare Federation member
agencies' Professional Staff.
Institute, led more than 100
participants through an exer-
cise he has presented to
35,000 Jewish persons in 35
countries, including the
USSR.

analysis as Bubis got them
out of their chairs and into
corners of the room identified
with different values.
The United Hebrew Schools
auditorium became a busy in-
tersection, with Bubis con-
trolling traffic from the
podium. Participants hurried
from corner to corner, decid-
ing whether "Helping Jews"
or "Helping Humanity" was
personally more important in
making their career decision,
or whether "Jewish Prac-
tices" was more likely to
raise Jewish • grandchildren
than was "Love of God."
What emerged from the
exercise was a picture of
changing Jewish values —
and Bubis' own recipe for a
dynamic Jewish life in
America:
• "If we continue to use
guilt and `gelt' as informing
reasons for being Jewish, it
should be no surprise to find
in a love-oriented society that
(some Jews will say) 'Include
me out.' The `Jewing' process
must be positive."
• "We're nourished by
those who convert to
Judaism. I'm all for inter-
marriage, as long as there's
conversion to Judaism."
• "Don't do a thing in your
house for 'the children'; do
everything for yourselves. If

it's real and authentic, your
children will know it ... As a
young couple, behave
Jewishly because it's the best
way Jews have of being hu-
man."

in Los Angeles, Bubis has
taught in colleges and uni-
versities across America, be-
coming — as one colleague
described him — "a legend in
our field." - -
He reminded his audience
— among them hospital and
social workers, fund raisers
and agency executives — that
"Our business is not only the
health of Jews, but the
health of Judaism ... In this
job, you're not earning a liv-
ing, you're making a life. If
you work in a Jewish agency,
you make a covenant with
the Jewish past to be a link
with the Jewish present for
the Jewish future."

Detroiter Charged
With War Crimes

Another Detroiter has been
charged with war crimes. Ac-
cording to documents filed by
the U.S. Justice Department's
Office of Special Investiga-
tions, Alfonsas Patalauskas,
76, led a group of Lithuanian
Nazi sympathizers known as
"baltaraisciai." The baltarais-
ciai in 1941 allegedly
marched thousands of Jews
into the Rase forest near
Utena, Lithuania, and killed
them.
"This is not the com-
mencement of a denaturaliza-
tion law suit," explained
Michael Wolf, OSI spokesman
