"Historically, this is an ex- tremely important discovery," according to Bernard Wax, director of The Society who recently discovered the let- ters in a metal container among the papers of the late Rabbi Edward Klein of the Free Synagogue in New York. "The Damascus Affair was a pivotal event in American Jewish history," Wax said. "It marked the first time there was an organized protest in- volving more than one Jewish community to protest outrages against Jews in an- other country." The Damascus Affair was a blood libel that occurred in Syria in 1840 when 13 Jews were imprisoned and tortured for the alleged ritual murders of a Christian monk and his servant. Sarid Suffers Heart Attack Jerusalem (JTA) — MK Yossi Sarid suffered a heart attack in the Knesset Dec. 10 and was taken to Hadassah Hospital where he was re- ported to be resting comfort- ably. Sarid, 45, a Knesset member for the Citizens Rights Movement (CRM) and an outspoken champion of civil rights and reconciliation between Israelis and Palesti- nians, was stricken outside the plenary chamber where he had just presented a mo- tion to abolish censorship of plays and films. The Knesset physician ad- ministered first aid until the arrival within minutes of an ambulance with special car- diac treatment equipment. Sarid did not lost conscious- ness but was in considerable pain. Tomato Row Resolved Jerusalem (JTA) — An in- terministerial dispute over tomatoes appeared to be re- solved. Acting Minister of Agricul- ture Ezer Weizman seems to have emerged the victor, though he walked off the job in disgust last week when the Finance Ministry announced over his objections that 100 tons of tomatoes would be air-freighted from Spain. The reason was the sea- sonal shortage which has sent the price of tomatoes soaring. The simplest cube to the most intricate wall unit built to your specifications by meticulous craftsmen.
