New York — A prominent
rabbi who works to build
1 peace among Jews and Arabs
\- in Israel has called for further
efforts "to bring Israeli Jews
and Arabs together in the
classroom, in the community,
, and on the playing fields.
Addressing a meeting
called by the Jewish Peace
Fellowship where he was
awarded the Fellowship's
Abraham Joshua Heschel
Peace Prize "for distin-
guished service to the peace-
ful ideals and practices of
\_. Judaism and for exceptional
/ contributions to peace-
making arising from the
Jewish tradition," Rabbi
Bruce Cohen, founder and in-
ternational director of In-
terns for Peace, stated that
"Interns for Peace is found-
ed on the conviction that
peace requires the strength to .
/ =-, reach across barriers of fear
and mistrust," adding that
"each of IFP's twenty in-
terns acts as a bridge be-
tween Jewish and Arab
citizens of Israel; their active
involvement in the daily life
of Jewish and Arab corn-
7- munities has fostered a new
spirit of co-operation and
understanding."
Interns for Peace, Rabbi
Cohen asserted, is a non-
political, grass-roots program
bringing together Israeli
Jews and Arabs. Founded in
1976, the IFP interns are
-_,
/ Arabs and Jews from Israel,
the United States and other
countries, who make a com-
mitment to live and work in
communities in Israel for a
two-year period.
Elie Wiesel, author, pro-
fessor at Boston University
and the 1986 Nobel Peace
prize laureate, spoke at the
ceremony which took place at
the Lindenbaum Jewish Com-
munity Center.
The Jewish Peace Fellow-
ship, founded in 1941, is the
\,, oldest Jewish Peace group in
the United States. JPF op-
poses capital punishment,
nuclear arms and the military
draft and supports peace
groups in Israel and non-
violent efforts for peace and
social betterment in the
United States and in Israel.

Jerusalem (JTA) — A re-
cent report on the world
Jewish population inadvert-
ently dropped a key word ,
when it stated that the world
Jewish populatimi by the end
of 1985 was down to 9.5
million.
The repbrt should have
clearly stated that the 9.5
million figure related only to
diaspora Jewry. There are
some 3.5 Jews in Israel. The
total, therefore, for world
Jewry is some 13 million.
