Michigan Executives
On Israel Mission
Executives of ten Michigan
companies and a president of
a major retail association re-
cently returned from the first
Michigan Business Mission to
Israel which coincided with
Israel-America Trade Week.
The mission was orgariized
by the executive director of
the American-Israel Chamber
of Commerce of Michigan,
Shelly Komer Jackier, in co-
operation with Doug Ross, di-
rector of the Michigan De-
partment of Commerce. Mona
Gubow, director, Joint Ven-
tures, Office of International
Development, served as the
representative of the Com-
merce Department on the
mission.

The Israel-America Trade
Week Conference covered
subjects ranging from the
implications of the New Free
Trade Agreement, one year
later; technological develop-
ments and research; joint
ventures; defense markets:
and the financial and legal
aspects of doing business
with Israel.
The mission also included
visits to Technion; the ag-
ricultural extension of, He-
brew University, Weizmann
Institute of Science, as well
as a visit from a professor of
bio-medical research at Bar-
Ilan University. These visits
were co-ordinated through
the Detroit representatives of
these universities: Max Gill,
Shayna Silverman, Edie Mit-
tenthal, and Les Goldstein.
The participants also vis-
ited Tefen Industrial Park,
outside Nahariya, and De-
troit's Project Renewal sister
city, Ramle. Benny Schwarz,
shaliach at Detroit's Israel
Aliyah Center arranged the
group's visit to Kibbutz
Afikim, his kibbutz in the
lower Galilee. They saw
Afikim's innovative chemical
fiber industry, and factories
producing milking machines
and motorized carts for the
handicapped.

members of the 100th Con-
gress are Jews. Michigan's
congressional delegation con-
tains three Jews: Sen. Carl
Levin (D-Mich.) and Reps.
Sander Levin (D-Southfield)
and Howard Wolpe (D-
Lansing).
These are among the find-
ings of the biennial survey of
the religious complexion of
Congress, conducted by Al-
bert Menendez of Americans
United for the . Separation of
Church and State.
The survey lists 141
Roman Catholic senators and
representatives, 74 United
Methodists, 60 Episcopalians,
57 Presbyterians and 54 Bap-
tists.
