Hudson Drive, Southfield, Michigan 313/559-6500 68 Friday, December 12, 1986 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS DANNY RASKIN WITH THE MEMORIES of Duke Ellington, Count Basie and so many other great orchestras in an era long past lurking about, Leah Marks and the Italian American Cultural Society presented Viva L'Italia at Or- chestra Hall. The old Paradise Theater of yesteryears was a glamorous scene ... as probably the finest musical fashion prod- uction presented in these parts unfolded on the huge Orchestra Hall stage. Where strains of Take The A Train drifted from below as Duke Ellington's fabulous or- chestra rose from a large pit to continue playing songs that made musical history, - a large stage is now positioned permanently. Harry Kosins remembers the old former Paradise The- ater well ... so does Arnie Becker, who reminisced that if people came three hotirs earlier they could get a seat up front in those days. That's where we chose to sit for the fashion show ... after gorging on the wonder- ful selections from about 20 restaurants ... including over 2,000 pieces of cocoanut chicken from Excalibur and enough shrimp from chef Marty Wilk to fill a lot of boats ... Mario's, Panache, Roma Cafe, E.G. Nicks, Red Devil, Joe Muer's, Caucus Club, C.A. Muer eateries, 1940 Chop House, Kingsley Inn, etc. Sitting in front was a good idea ... even if near the show's opening, fog wafted onto our faces ... It was a brilliant setting with Roman columns against which some of the pretty and statuesque models leaned ... Muscular Roman gladiators carrying the lovelies on their shoul- ders, snow, brilliant lighting and music with a soft beat. The fashions were abso- lutely breathtaking ... from Naomi's, Kosins Clothes, John Darakjian Jewelers, D.O.C. Optique and Bricker- Tunis Furs ... elegantly pre- sented in an extremely well- paced, high coordination of beauteous glamor. When the curtains rose, the names of these stores ... plus those of Mariomax, who styled the models' hair, and Tamara Institute de Beaute cosmetic artists for the mod- els. This was without doubt Leah Marks' best ex- travaganza ... and as Al Jol- son said, "It ain't over yet, folks!" ... Leah has even more elaborate ideas in that ever-working brain of hers. Between 600 and 700 people enjoyed the variety of foods ... thrilled to the high-styled offerings ... and experienced the warm convi- viality among each other. Ben Kosins recuperating from quadruple bypass ... This will be first December in 55 years that Ben will not be at Kosins Clothes ... 'owned by him and brother Harry ... Doctor says to take it easy for a few months and he'll do it in Florida ... Barbara Fein- berg and "my date" son of hers and Roy's, Danny ... Harry Kosins and his "date" ... daughter of his and wife , Marilyn's, very talented songstress Kathie Kosins. Billy Rose Trio strolling about while folks savored the food ... so many people ... such a wonderful evening ... and so much more to come as the folks sat themselves in an Orchestra Hall that will be renovated to be among the world's finest ... It already has the great accoustics Paradise Theater was noted for ... along with its balcony and tiered box seats around the sides. This was a show that needed no commentary ... it spoke for itself ... very loud ... and clear ... John Finck introduced the evening ... and Leah and her models, as- sisted by Bonnie Suder, choreographer, and Jim Nel- son, stage manager, did the rest. The show followed a tribute to Frank Stella, in whose honor Viva L'Italia was pre- sented ... Designers Lou Myles and Dominic Rompollo were introduced ... and Frank was given a custom- tailored Lou Myles suit. This was a fashion show of fashion shows ... styles at their highest ebb ... preci- sion coordination that flowed with the grace of an elegant champagne. , Naomi's on Orchard Lake Road, Kosins Clothes on Southfield Road, Bricker- Tunis Furs on Orchard Lake Road and John Darakjian Jewelers on Franklin Road and Northwestern ... Re- vealed styles that brought ahs! and oohs! of captivating intrigue. Leah Marks has produced many fashion shows ... but none better than this ... a fashion extravaganza at its best ... Leah's shows seem to gain even greater quality each time! and "Stuffed Cabbage. You're gonna love it. They're big, they're sweet, and they're not doing anything for dinner!" Number 23 at Shanghai Shapiro's is Who Dip Har? and picture by it says, "I did!" "To eat with chopsticks, hold firmly between thumb and forefinger, throw on floor and pick up fork." This is the new Shanghai Shapiro's, open for lunch and dinner ... with fortune cookies that have Jewish proverbs. IT'S CALLED Gateway Deli at Harvard Row, Lahser and 11 Mile, but sign above cash register says, "Lenny's" ... The lighted neon hting in window at place owned by Lenny Fidler seven years ago on Orchard Lake Road be- tween 12 and 13 Mile .. now occupied by Sunrise Cafe number three. The sign was at Marty Weinstock's Radiant Sign Co. just lying around when Marty gave it to Lenny's son Jeff, who was going to Wash- ington where dad had Gate- way Delicatessen ... Lenny brought it back here, had the sign refurbished and it hangs in the glory of those seven years ago. FORTY FOUR years back, Lenny and partner Shel Loewy became the second owners of Lou's Deli on West McNichols east of Schaefer. STILL ANOTHER Morris Margulies development . . . Carson Center ... to be built on Northwestern Hwy. near Franklin Plaza. - "JAKARTA GINGER CHICKEN. If you don't know what Jakarta means, don's ask us because we don't either. Just order this dish. Be careful. It's a hot one!" This is a sample of the menu at new Shanghai Shap- iro's Chinese and deli restau- rant recently opened at West Bloomfield Plaza, Orchard Lake Rd. south of Maple ... locale of former Encore deli. It's operated by Henry Yee and Iry Greenberg: "Fancy Shmancy Dishes" has "Roast of BBQ Chicken. Whether we roast it or bar- becue this is the best half of a spring chicken ever sprung" ... and "Whitefish Filet. Traditionally tender and tasty. No bones about it!" ... Mort Zieve and Soupy Sales. IN THE '70s, Soupy Sales was a spokesman for Elias Brothers Big Boy ... and did a number of commercials for the family restaurant chain ... Producer of the spots was Mort Zieve, who had worked with Soupy at WXYZ-TV Channel 7 in the Maccabees Bldg. when both were WXYZ-TV employees. They had a reunion re- cently when Soupy, king of the pie-in-the-face . . . and Mort, now one of the bossmen at Simons Michelson Zieve Advertising andThe Jewish News movie critic met to tape Continued on Page 70
