"I was neither engaged in nor directed to conduct any activities against the United States and I will never admit to that fact," he added. Besides the four Israeli of- ficials named in the federal in- dictment against him last June, no other people have been implicated in the opera- tion. But Justice Department officials maintain that their investigation into allegations of a broader spy network is continuing. Among those Israeli of- ficials who have been named in court papers as unindicted co-conspirators were Rafael Eitan, the veteran Israeli masterspy who served as Pollard's chief handler; Yosef Yagur, an aide to Eitan who served as a Science Counselor at the Israeli Consulate in New York; Irit Irb, a secretary to the Science Counsellor at the Israeli Em- bassy in Washington who routinely photocopied docu- ments provided by Pollard; and Israeli Air Force Col. Aviem Sella, the commander of the Ramon Air Base in the Negev who served as Pol- lard's first contact. According to court docu- ments, Sella, as a graduate student at New York Univer- sity, was first approached by Pollard in June 1984. Sella was instructed to turn Pollard over to Eitan's "Lekem" scientific intelligence unit which has since been disbanded. Once underway, the opera- tion continued until Pollard was arrested outside the Israeli Embassy in Washing- ton on Nov. 21, 1985. U.S. prosecutors have been trying to question Sella about his exact role in the network. They already have questioned the other implicated Israeli officials as part of an Israeli governmental decision to cooperate with the U.S. investigation. The Israeli government has argued that the operation was unauthorized and represented a violation of Israeli policy. U.S. officials remain skeptical of that assertion, in part because of Eitan's subse- quent appointment to head Israel Chemicals, the largest government-owned company in Israel. So far, the Israeli govern- ment is refusing to make Sella available for a similar round of questions. Last June, Pollard pleaded guilty to espionage charges against him. His wife, Anne Henderson-Pollard, pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of possessing classified docu- ments.
