PP/D81. OCC. MIN. ROOM • SHARES ARRANGED

This Passover enjoy a traditional atmosphere NIGHT
that can only be found in a completely Sabbath and
Yom Tov observing hotel. That hotel is the luxurious

= supremacy and Black Muslim
hate groups. If he is ever
thrown into a general prison
population, he could be
severely hurt or even killed.
He has lost 60 pounds since„
his arrest and quit smoking.
Because he was originally
overweight, he commented,
"Those are the only positive
developments that have hap-
pened." He did appear
physically fit and mentally
alert.
And in explaining how an
idealistic and intelligent son
of the American Jewish com-
munity wound up in this
mess, he spoke at great
length, articulately and
cogently. His biggest regret
was that his case has allowed
allegations of "dual loyalty"
against American .Jews to
surface "among bigots within
and without the government."
Israeli officials and
American Jewish leaders
declined to comment public-
ly on Pollard's interview.
- - Privately, however, several of
them noted that Pollard's
comments contrasted sharp-
ly with his earlier public im-
age as a self-promoter and
mercenary, spying for Israel
in exchange for money.
Pollard, while acknowledg-
ing that he committed a bad
mistake by agreeing to spy
for Israel, insisted that his
motives were pure. He said
that he was acting strictly
.- out of his Zionist commit-
ment to Israel. "I was raised
to believe in the centrality of
Israel to the Jewish people,"
0 he said.
"I broke the law," he con-
tinued. "I'm not mincing any
words. I broke the law. I've
never considered myself
above the law."
But as a civilian in-
(
telligence analyst for the U.S.
Navy, he had come across
what he described as very
frightening information con-
1 cerning security threats fac-
ing Israel. After learning that
this information was not
routinely being provided to
Israel through official chan-
nels, he decided to act on his
own. He strongly denied that
he was part of any broader
American Jewish spy net-
work operating for Israel.
- Pollard, during the inter-
view with me, maintained
that he never actually spied
"against" the United States.
He said he merely provided
Israel with information con-
. cerning Arab military
threats. He did not see any-
thing contradictory in his be-
ing "a good Zionist and a
good American."
"I certainly didn't believe
what I did would hurt the
United States," he said. "Far
from it." Indeed, he insisted
that by strengthening Israel,
he was also strengthening the
