Tel Aviv (JTA) — A dele-
gation from the Nicaraguan
Ministry of Agriculture
which was to have visited Is-
rael next month at the invi-
tation of Mapam has indi-
cated it will cancel the trip.
It would have been the first
official delegation from that
Central American country to
visit Israel since the San-
dinista government came to
power in 1979.
The apparent cancellation
follows widespread reports
that Israel was instrumental
in transferring money paid
by Iran for American
weapons to the Reagan
Administration-backed Con-
tra rebels seeking to over-
throw the Sandinista gov-
ernment.
Israel's involvement in that
transaction was alleged by
U.S. Attorney General Edwin
Meese at a White House
press conference November
25. Israel has vigorously de-
nied that it was ever aware
of the transfer.
Kashrut
Agreement
Milwaukee (JTA) — The
Wisconsin Council of Rabbis
and an Orthodox rabbinic
group have agreed on a plan
of joint certification of kas-
hrut to apply to the entire
Jewish community. The Or-
thodox Vaad Harabonim will
set the standards, which will
be administered through the
council.
The agreement, ratified
Nov. 18 by the council, ends
a dispute that arose last
summer over the standards of
kashrut. The council's lone
remaining Orthodox rabbi
resigned in October partly
over this issue. Wisconsin Or-
thodox pulpit rabbis belong to
the Vaad Haradonim, reor-
ganized about two years ago.
Long-time Milwaukee Re-
form Rabbi Jay Brickman of
Congregation Sinai hailed
the rabbis' agreement as "an
example of working coopera-
tion" that marked a "return
to the mutual respect" that
had characterized Mil-
waukee's Jewish community.
Orthodox Call
To Divest
Baltimore (JTA) — The
Union of Orthodox Jewish
Congregations of America
(UOJC) unanimously adopted
a resolution at the close of its
national convention calling
on "all Jewish institutions,
our member congregations
and their congregants to di-
vest from their portfolios all
investments in companies
that do business with South
Africa and do not comply
with the 'Sullivan Princi-
ples'."
