With regard to the TWA
flight 847 affair, Rivers tells
how specially trained
counter-terrorist units with
the right electronic equip-
ment, stun grenades and
other paraphernalia could

passengers when the plane
was at the Beirut airport.
One incredible proposal has
> anti-terrorist units drilling
holes in the airplane's fusel-
\,= age in order to insert highly
sensitive microphones into
7 them. The information picked
up in this way would be of
inestimable value in prepar-
ing for the final assault.

Rivers is not a bit skittish
about revealing information
which terrorists_ themselves
might find interesting. He
says, for example, that El Al
) regularly places passengers'
luggage into armored casings
from which air is pumped out
so that any explosive device
dependant on air pressure
would automatically deto-
nate.
In his consideration of
political and moral factors in
the war against terrorism,
Rivers has only scorn for the
democracies like France and
Italy; they have behaved in a
supine manner, he says, hop-
ing that conciliatory acts
towards the terrorists would
spare their nation any vio-
lence. Rivers says, moreover,
that the real reason the Ita-
lian Prime Minister (since
resigned) Bettino Craxi re-
leased the terrorist planner of
the Achille Lauro caper was
because the United States
has a policy of refusing to
extradite IRA terrorists to
England.
Rivers is very cynical about
the West's ability to confront
\/_, the terrorist menace. He is
indignant at the West's de-
sire to placate and explain
away every terrorist act. Riv-
ers is especially exercised by
those who make distinctions
between good and bad ter-
rorists.
In his treatment of the
major Arab terrorist groups,
Rivers has some startling
things to say. For one, he
claims that Mohammed
Masalhah, one of the ter-
rorists involved in the
Munich massacre in 1972,
was actually employed by the
German authorities as an ar-
chitect on the Olympic vil-
