The Jewish community "is
beginning a process to care-
fully look at the needs and
requirements for a Jewish
hospice," explained Dr. Con-
rad Giles, president of the
Jewish Welfare Federation.
He said that process would
begin in 90 to 120 days from
now, with a plan to be issued
six months after that.
Under existing conditions,
he said, the Jewish commu-
nity "has provided help for
Jews in the Southeastern
Michigan hospice," including
visits by local rabbis.
What are the possible
forms such a Jewish hospice
could take? Dr. Giles said it
was unlikely -that a building
would have to be constructed.
"The recommendation may be
a Jewish ambience in an
otherwise non-Jewish hos-
pice," he said.

Gay Jews Create
Own Prayerbook

New York (JTA) — A
Jewish prayerbook for
homosexuals has been pre-
pared by Cong. Sha'ar Zahav
in San Francisco, one of 20
such congregations in the
United States.
Members describe their ap-
proach to preparing the
prayerbook as based on such
goals as "providing faithful
and poetic translations of
traditional prayers, removing
gender references to God,
recognizing the contribution
of women as well as men to
Jewish history and tradition
and adding prayers and
readings which would reflect
the experiences of gay and
lesbian Jews."
They commented that
"there are, of course, no 'gay
prayers,' only prayers which
contain themes common to all
people: wonder, loneliness,
joy, the need to be comforted,
to challenge and protest, to
express awe and thankful-
ness."
Citing the passage from
Ecclesiastes that "there is a
time to weep and a time to
rejoice," the two men re-
ported that "services at
Sha'ar Zahav are much more
rejoicing than weeping. We
begin almost every service,
for example, by linking arms,
standing and singing `Hinei
Ma Toy' (Behold, How
Good)."
But at their synagogue,
they reported that the song's
next phrase, "shevet achim
gam yachad," is alternated
with "shevet achayot gam
yachad" — "How good it is
for brothers and sisters to
live together, in harmony and
in peace."

They suggested that "there
may come a time when 'gay
synagogues' are no more
needed than tailors' or
shoemakers' synagogues.
