Books Guide Travelers
In 'Jewish' Europe

f 5747 is your year for
traveling in Europe, you
can gather volumes of in-
formation about Jewish life
there. Congregations, Jewish
federations and Jewish cen-
ters can provide lists of their
counterparts overseas.

And two new books also
may be of assistance.

Guide to Jewish Europe,
Western Europe Edition, by
Asher Israelowitz (Asher
Publications), packs hundreds
of important and interesting
facts into a little more than
200 pages. Although it lists
concentration camps and
cemeteries, the total effect is
upbeat, because it offers
many opportunities for a good
time.

Nineteen countries are
covered with the usual in-
formation -- synagogues and
centers, kosher restaurants
and hotels, old and new
landmarks and community
agencies. In addition, there
are local telephone numbers,
inter-city railroad timetables
and, of all things, locations of
American Express offices. For
younger folks, youth hostels
and Israeli folk dance centers
are listed. Also included are a
perpetual Sabbath
candlelighting timetable and
the location of ritual baths.

Most city and nation sec-
tions begin with a short his-
tory of the Jews there, point-
ing out how they have been
part of the culture for hun-
dreds of years. Maps and
photos add to the value of the
book. Israelowitz is a practic-
ing architect and professional
photographer, so he has an
eye for visuals that will be.

be surprised to see the world

understand that a "salt beef
