Say "Cheese" and Put a Smile on Your Kids' Faces leutive vice president, Rothenberg reports, calls for funds to combat "threats to the very foundation of our democracy" by enabling the AJC to present the Jewish - ide of the debate on TV and radio. The AJC appeal, he omplains, labels TV evangel- i st and potential presidential Jandidate Pat Robertson "an exemplar of a larger and, from our perspective, dangerous trend." The Rothenberg article i- serts that nowhere does the AJC refer to any anti-Semit- Writing in the Wall Street Journal, an American Jew is 7ritical of the American Jewish Committee's campaign against fundamentalists. ism associated with the Robertson campaign and that it concedes that Robertson "is a strong supporter of Israel." The letter, he says, ex- oresses concern over Robert- son positions on prayer and the teaching of "creationism" in the schools and over his `strong promotion of the doc- trine of original intent of the onstitution" which he said, according to the letter, "reflects an interpretation of the Constitution which is harply at odds with that of ost Jews." Rothenberg takes off from here with a blast at the AJC. Its objective in seeking money for this campaign, he asserts, "is not the protection f the security of Israel or the rights of American Jewry gainst religious persecution but the preservation of a ocial agenda of contempor- ary political liberalism: affir- mative action quotas, forced school busing, abortion on de- and, and unfettered policy- • aking power by political ac- tivists on the bench." The AJC, he says, offers no reason why the American Jewish community as a bloc should resist any criticism of these dogmas, particularly af- firmative action quotas, (to hich the AJC is strongly op- posed) which, he alleges, have een even more detrimental to American Jewry than to the rest of the middle class. If the AJC effort is proper at all, Rothenberg asserts, "it ould seem more appropri- ately aimed at venomous anti-Semitism on the left" as evidenced by the Jackson- Farrakhan foray into presidential politics. But why should it be per- ,missible for Christian fun- damentalist to propagate )t heir views actively and im- L proper for the Jews to defend those widely held by Jews? Rothenberg does not explain except to warn that a Jewish advertising blitz would be "bound to incense the sub- jects of the attack." Rothenberg's ideological identification with the philosophy which animates the National Jewish Coalition propaganda — that Ameri- can Jews should take their political marching orders from Israel — is evidenced in his assertion that "it is in- deed ironic that the AJC, ostensibly speaking for this country's Jewish community, in effect is declaring war on a movement that has been as- siduously courted by Israeli prime ministers." If it were otherwise, if American Jews were to take their marching orders from Israeli prime ministers, as Rothenberg would seem to prefer, then there would be merit to the frequent anti- Semitic charges that the American Jew has dual loyal- ties with the primacy in Jerusalem. But the over- whelming majority of American Jews who support Israel, resent Israeli in- terference in our domestic af- fairs, just as Israelis object to American Jewish interven- tion in theirs.
