The Blue Danube on Ot- tawa St. in Windsor, owned by Sam and Zora Papadio, can be proud of an authentic Hungarian heritage . When Sam and Zora took over in 1980, it originally sat 65 people ... The little clo- thing operation next door was acquired and made into an- other room to seat 65 more ... Two wood and brick archways now separate the rooms. Between Freed's Mens Wear and Blue Danube, they popularize Ottawa Street in Windsor. It is a very intimate Hun- garian restaurant ... with red flecked wallpaper sur- rounding the room just below ceiling ... green tablecloths, white napkins, dishes, scarfs and paintings on the wooden walls. Blue Danube's Fall Gypsy Festival was going on . with 15 musicians, opera singer and card reader ... Continuous music from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. Our waitress, Lou Ann Stumpf, so efficient, pleasant and cordial, brought me a large authentic piece of wiener schnitzel (veal cutlet) served as it should be . with slice of lemon on top ... This little touch, lacking at so many places who claim to have the real thing in Hun- garian dining, was what we looked for in ordering ... To me, it is one of my ways of relating to the dish's pre- sentation authenticity. The Tony Michaels Gypsy Trio is a stalwart at Blue Danube ... one of the main reasons why people readily make the short trip to Windsor ... You'll like the Blue Danube ... its food, service and ambience. MORE BIG CHANGES at Jacques on Telegraph ... Heinz Menguser is the new executive chef ... and Bob Kimoto maitre d' ... Both were previously at the former Drake Restaurant. IN HOUSE ROMANCE DEPT. ... Head waitress Lynne Gogos and manager Tom Fast see so much of The Eatery on W. Ten Mile that they became man and wife ... and had their reception ... where else but at The Eatery. Tom was manager at The Eatery in Royal Oak and hired Lynne over a year ago. THE ASSURANCE IS that speakers at next year's Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame will be given a shor- tened alloted time for all speeches. It's the only thing that might possibly have been a mar in the Second Annual Induction Dinner at Cong. Shaarey Zedek ... Every- - thing else went very smoothly and it was an enjoyable evening for the 450 who attended. However, it is very difficult to shorten worthy praise for inductees ... and even har- der for those entering the Michigan Jewish sports shrine ... After all, this was a moment to remember ... and those persons brought into the Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame could scarcely be blamed for not enabling themselves to speak without tender emotion of wonderful memories. Again, nary a complaint on the food ... as Paul Kohn of Quality Kosher Catering-put out his usual fine fare. Olympic fencer Byron Krieger, University of Michi- gan All-American Mery Pre- gulman and the late Philip "Cincy" Sachs, known as "Mr. Basketball" in this region, were honored at Cong. Shaarey Zedek ... joining Hank Greenberg, Harry Newman, Benny Friedman and William Davidson. Stu Klitenic, Channel 7 sportscaster, emceed in a strange way ... he wasn't waving his hands around ... Sen. Jack Faxon, cousin to Mery Pregulman, must have been told to make it fast ... as he humorously talked "a mile-a-minute" in presenting resolutions to cuz ... Mel Al- len, one-time great sportscas- ter for New York Yankees, All-Star games and Wdrld Series, added local family ties (Hershel and Max Lieb) to his reminiscing ... remem- bered . most among the attendees by Detroit Tiger Hall of Famer, Charlie Gehringer. Bob Page, local sportscas- ter, about Lem Barney's de- rby, "It's his version of a yarmulke" ... Stu on the dias and his greeting from the fletroit Lion All-Pro, "Shalom, baby." ... Barrister Abe Selesnie looking like Tevya from Fiddler On The Roof . . . Too bad Abe can't sing ... Moe Hozman a knockout victor over the flu . Mark Plotkin with sarto- rial elegance ... Allan Schwartz, "The Singing Win- dow Washer," always good for a joke or two or three, etc. Rick Brode, who club own- ers agree as the athlete's agent they'd like most to deal with ... Always a gentleman and pleasant ... They'd rather give him and his client more than give in to a nasty hardnose ... Rick's dad, Seymour Brode, is Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame treasurer ... and owner of Franklin Racquet Club . . . "The last time I spoke at Shaarey Zedek," said Seymour is his welcom- ing address, "was at my bar mitzvah." They said Lou Schwartz was crazy when he left many years ago to live in Holly, Mich ... Lou has the last . laugh ... It's a booming town ... and he owns a lot of it now ... David Matz better- looking today then when a youth ... Sherry Margolis of Channel 2 as sweet as she is pretty ... Dave Sachs wear- ing hat formerly owned by his brother "Cincy." So much credit to the offi- cers of Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame ... Al Foon, president; Billy Jacobs, Bob Steinberg and Myron Milgrom, vice presidents; Mickey Fishman, secretary; and Seymour Brode, trea- surer ... Plus Jim Grossman, executive director; and Doris August, assistant executive director. BEST OF BEST'S is cen- tennial year celebration by Chicago-based Best Kosher Sausage Co. ... which now manufactures over 50 differ- ent sausage products ... in- cluding a couple of interna- tional firsts ... kosher all- beef bratwurst and kosher all-beef hot links with "a Latin kick." Super markets also have (or should have) those jumbo quarter-pounder pure beefs, all-beef Polish sausages with oodles of garlic and season- ings, all-beef smoked sausage and all-beef Italian sausage spiced with natural season- ings. All are delicious with or without the traditional bun ... and have that "old world" style flavor which has become so very popular in the prep- aration of foods. Super markets without a complete line of Best's prod- ucts are really losing out. RUMORS, RUMORS, RUMORS and one of them, if any, could possibly be true ... about who will be the next owner and operator of Jakks Lounge, Greenfield and Ten Mile. COCO'S DEPT. ... "Well, we dogs are finally getting more and more recognition. Now there's a 'Canine Casino Night' this Sunday, 2 to 8 p.m. at Holly Hotel in Holly. $25 ticket includes wine, champagne, hors d' oeuvres, games and chance at door prizes. Dog treats are fact that all proceeds benefit homeless and abused being cared for by Michigan Humane Society. Ain't you glad you're not one of them? I sure am!" GOOD HOSTESS DEPT. ... Elizabeth LaFrance ... at West End Restaurant in Somerset Inn on W. Big Be- aver, Troy ... always smil- ing, so very pleasant and graciously efficient. GOOD WAITER DEPT. ... Henry Wing ... also at West End ... with high qual- ity effectiveness at its best. THIS SUNDAY ... is "Music On Main Street" con- cert, 7 p.m., at Tel-12 Mall's Restaurants on Main Street ... It's given by Young Variety Club of DetrOit and Friends of M.S. 1
