It was a welcome part for Baron, who performs such • rituals regularly. The rabbi • had heard of the upcoming television nuptials through a congregation member friendly to the program's pro- ducer. Baron was eager to participate. "I didn't have to study for the part," Baron kibbitzes. "After all, I do such things all year 'round. "Of course," he adds, "we eliminated some things like the ketubah so that the cere- mony wouldn't be official and the actors wouldn't really get married." Nevertheless, it was a different kind of experience for Baron, who was helped by members of the cast in get- ting into make-up and the part. Yet, there was one cast member who kept eyeing him quizzically. "She kept staring," recalls Baron. "It wasn't until I got into robe and tallit that she yelled out, 'Of course, I know you. You're my rabbi!' " She hadn't recognized Baron when he first arrived on the set attired in his sweatsuit. \_ The taping was no sweat • for the rabbi, "a great, won- • derful experience. There were • many takes, but it went very well." Yet, the rabbi had some "artistic differences." "I had some problems with the script," he says. "There were two places in the script that did not reflect how I would do things." For one, "there was no blessing at the end of the ceremony, and duing the ceremony, there was nothing ,D that alluded to the symbol of the chuppah." Both concerns were re- ctified, with all happy with the results. "Everyone shouted `Mazel toy!' at the end of the ceremony." But first, there were other problems to deal with. "Yes," says Baron, "one of the bride's jilted lovers — also a Jewish character — was lurk- ing in the back. There was that big dramatic question: Would he take her away?" a la Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate? In the meantime, Baron is more attuned to the televi- sion industry's needs. "We're now offering a free consultation service for tele- vision programmers," he says. "We'll be a clearin- ghouse" on rituals depicted on the air. Is Rabbi Baron ready for another role? "Well," he says, "I've never really done any 'acting.' Of course, for this, I really played myself. It would have been interesting had I played a priest." He thinks for a moment. "Now that would have been the ultimate challenge." , MON. . . . BAKED LAMB OR LIVER & ONIONS $4.99 WED. . . .
