Rabbi Lane Steinger

Temple Emanu-El will
honor Rabbi Lane Steinger at
8:15 p.m. Dec. 12 "for ten
years of service and inspira-
tional leadership both to
Temple Emanu-El and to the
Jewish community of the De-
troit Metropolitan area."
Rabbi Steinger came to
Temple Emanu-El in August
1976.
Temple Emanu-El will
celebrate this simchah at a
Shabbat dinner on Dec. 12.
The dinner will be followed
by a Shabbat service.
To honor Rabbi Steinger,
his friend and former
classmate, Rabbi John
Spitzer of Temple Israel in
Canton, Ohio, will be the
guest speaker. Rabbi Spitzer
was assistant rabbi at Tem-
ple Shaare Emeth in St.
Louis, Mo., before assuming
the pulpit in Canton four
years ago. He has been active
in the Reform movement, and
has been particularly effec-
tive in national programming
for singles.

New York (JTA) — Amos
Mansdorf became the first
Israeli to win a major interns-
' tional tennis tournament
) when he defeated American
Matt Anger last Sunday in
the South African Open in
\ Johannesburg. The rising
,--y oung Israeli star overcame
the defending champion 6-3,
3-6, 6-2, 7-5 to win $43,000,
his biggest single check.
In the quarterfinals, Mans-
dorf beat the tournament's
top seed and world's 10th
_ranked player, Andres Gomez
of Ecuador, 64, 6-4. In the
semifinals, he defeated South
African Eddie Edwards, 6-0,
7-5. Earlier this month,
Mansdorf beat the world's
fifth-ranked player, Henri
\ LeConte of France, who had
beaten him at the U.S. Open
here in August.
