4 For All Window Treatments: the efforts of the Diaspora to raise funds on Israel's behalf, I fail to see why a blanket of self-censorship should be placed on reporting about what is done — or not done — with the money. She replied that she had never looked at the matter in this way before. While some people such as this Wizo leader thought that I had gone too far, others thought that the series did not go far enough. Some critics said that I failed to raise the basic questions of whether the Jewish Agency serves any purpose today, and whether or not its functions could just as well be carried out by the Israeli government or some other organizations. Similar questions could be posed about the WZO. These are not trivial issues, and they are being asked with increasing frequency in both Israel and the Diaspora. But I confess that I deliberately avoided them in the series. The polemics conducted on these issues are often painful- ly devoid of any factual basis and are clouded by many myths and prejudices. So I thought it would be prefer- able to set forth the facts, as best as I could ascertain them, about the Agency and WZO on a limited number of issues of current interest. If this stimulates a more in- formed and dispassionate discussion of the larger ques- tions, then for me, as a jour- nalist and a Jew concerned about the future of Israel- Diaspora relations, this shall suffice. Fair Housing Violation Argued L New York — The Anti- Defamation League of B'nai B'rith asked the Virginia Supreme Court to declare il- legal real estate advertise- ments that use Christian symbols and slogans in viola- tion of U.S. and Virginia fair housing laws. In an amicus curiae, friend of the court brief, ADL said the use of a fish symbol, closely linked to the Chris- tian religion, and slogans such as "Jesus is Coming" by a Newport News, Va. real es- tate firm convey beyond question a "preference for and limitation" to Christian customers. Joining ADL in supporting Virginia's case against Lotz Realty were the Catholic Dio- cese of Richmond, Va., the United Jewish Community of the Virginia Peninsula, Inc. and Housing Opportunities Made Equal (HOME), a local anti-discrimination in hous- ing group.
