Providing a legal defense on
Israeli security cases is equal-
ly secretive. Vanunu's at-
torney, Amnon Zichroni, is
one of a handful of Israeli
• lawyers certified to act in
security cases. Generally,
Zichroni is not permitted to
acknowledge any details of
the case, even that he is the
attorney of record. The few
details Zichroni has released,
such as that he has seen
Vanunu on numerous occa-
sions, has complete access to
him, and that his spirits are
good, are generally classified
facts as well.
Confounding any debate
about secrecy surrounding
Vanunu's crimes is the Israeli
government's refusal to reveal
what prison he is being held
in. However, it has been
learned that when Zichroni
first met his client, Vanunu
was still dressed in the jeans
and shirt he had worn on the
boat during transit — that is,
if reports of an arrest by sea
are indeed correct. All his lug-
gage accompanied the prison-
er, although he was not given
access to his other clothes un-
til just recently. It was also
reported that Vanuna was at
first incarcerated at Gdera, a
/ national security detention
facility.
But Vanunu has since been
moved and his prison locale is
a sought-after bit of informa-
tion in Israel. Zichroni has
conducted seven sessions
• with his client, for periods of
up to five hours at a time. lb
> reach the prison and yet avoid
being followed by a gaggle of
reporters, Zichroni has been
compelled to switch cars and
make secret getaways.
Credible media reports
/- assert that Vanunu is now in
the Arab maximum security
prison at Ashkelon. Of 550
prisoners at Ashkelon, 525
are Arab security prisoners,
and only 25 are Jewish. Al-

isolation cell, with no visitors
except interrogators and

tions except radio and

brought by his attorney.
One explanation for the
secret move was that Vanunu,
now considered the Benedict
Arnold of Israel, might be
killed by Jewish prisoners.
