New York — A specialist
in Middle Eastern affairs
warned that there is an ero-
sion in Syria's perception of
the costs of war with Israel,
thereby increasing the
danger of such a conflict.
Dr. Shai Feldman, a senior
research fellow at the Jaffee
Institute for Strategic Studies
at Tel Aviv University, said
that a policy of strategic de-
terrence has kept the peace
between Syria and Israel in
recent years.
A major reason for the
change, he said, is a massive
buildup by the Syrian armed
forces. In the past, Syria re-
garded itself as not having
military parity with Israel.
That is not quite the case to-
day, he reported, since Syria's
forces have doubled since
1978. There has been an
enormous anti-tank buildup
in the area between Israel's
border on the Golan Heights
and Damascus. Anti-aircraft
missiles and artillery have
increased and the Syrian air
force is becoming more
sophisticated.

Archaeologist
Aided Allies

Chevy Chase, Md. —
Documents recently released
under the Freedom of Infor-
mation Act reveal that one of
the 20th Century's greatest
archaeologists, Nelson
Glueck, was a spy for the
U.S. Office of Strategic Serv-
ices (OSS) during World War
II.
Writing in the Sept.-Oct.
issue of Biblical Archaeology
Review, Floyd Fierman reve-
als that Glueck, a rabbi and
director of the American
School of Oriental Research
(1936-1940), using an ar-
chaeological survey as a
cover, helped the Allied
forces map the Palestinian
desert region in the early
days of the war. The mapping
especially noted sources of
water in the arid region and
areas of special strategic
interest to the Allies.
