aking a class in his-
tory, learning He-
brew, going camping,
teaching a philosophy course,
playing the role in a
show at the community thea-
ter, participating in physical
competitions — you might be
tempted to pass these off as
activities for the young. But
every day more and more
senior adults in our commu-
nity are finding that their r&
tirement years can be fulfil-
ling, exciting and challeng-
ing. The concept of being "put
out to pastuie" at age 65 has
undergone some serious
changes.
Each year the number of
older adults in our commu-
nity, and worldwide, con-
tinues to grow. In Oakland
County alone there has been
an inc...i.ease over the past ten
years of 30,000 residents age
65 and ()icier. Improvements
in lifelong health care and
other factors, have led to
more seniors surviving into
their 70s, 80s and 90s.
The majority of the older
population in Michigan is not
institutionalized, 94 percent,

proportion of these older
adults can be termed the
"well elderly," persons living
an independent or semi-
independent lifestyle.
As a community, Detroit
has an impressive record of
services and activities geared
to this segment of the popula-
tion. There is plenty older
people can do to keep active,
and support services for those
who need them.
Detroit's two Jewish Com-
munity Center branches of-
fers plenty of programming
geared towards seniors. If you
wander into the Center on
Ten Mile Road in Oak Park
any weekday, you will be
greeted at the door by one of
the hospitality committee,
and steered in the right di-
rection depending on your
needs.
According to Miriam
Sandweiss, director of the
senior adult department of
the Jewish Community Cen-
ter, "This is really a multi-
purpose center for the well
elderly. We have a wellness-
oriented program recognized
by the state of Michigan.
There's . a physical fitness
program with wonderful
classes. We have the Jewish
Information Service located
in the building and it's a
wonderful resource. The Cen-
ter acts as a locus for services
