Others are furious that
Israel has been aiding Iran, a
country that is widely regard-
ed as a major sponsor of in-
ternational terrorism and the
guiding hand behind attacks
on Israel by the Islamic
fundamental-
ist Hizbollah movement in
South Lebanon.
"There is a conspiracy of
silence," complained Elazar
Granot,, a left-wing Knesset
member, "and I can only
wonder what has been swept
under this Persian carpet."
Added Yossi Said, a mem-
ber of the powerful Knesset
Defence and Foreign Affairs
Committee, which had been
denied a briefing on the issue
by both Shamir and Peres:
"Even if only a tiny part of
what has been published is
accurate, this government has
committed one of the most
grievous errors in the coun-
try's history."

military equipment for
prosecuting the Gulf War
against Iraq.
At the very least, they
argued, Israel should act to
prevent an ultimate Iraqi vic-
tory which would free the one-
million-man, battle-hardened
and well-equipped Iraqi Army
to fight another day, this time
on Israel's eastern or north-
ern fronts.
Iran, extreme as it may be,
was, with Israel, the only
other non-Arab state in the
region and common cause
might yet be found between
these two apparently incom-
patible governments—if not
now, then in a post-Khomeini
world.
This proposal fell on highly
receptive ears in Jerusalem,
where there is a powerful in-
terest in promoting arms ex-
ports and prolonging the Gulf
War by keeping Iran and Iraq
at each other's throats.

Iran's War Machine

Iran last year lavished $15
billion on its military machine
and drew on a wide range of
Western and Eastern sup-
pliers, according to the
authoritative "Middle East
Military Balance," published
earlier this year by Thl Aviv
University's Center for
Strategic Studies.
It received patrol boats
from Sweden, trainer aircraft
from Switzerland and ar-
tillery pieces from South
Africa. There were landing
vessels, workshops and spare

parts from Britain; army
trucks from France; tanks
from Argentina and Brazil,
helicopters from Italy.

Among its other arms sup-
pliers are China, the Soviet
Union and its Eastern bloc
allies, North and South
Korea, Syria, Libya and
Algeria.
The Iranian armed forces
number 355,000 men, with a
further 775,000 Revolu-
tionary Guards, volunteers
and child soldiers.

No Hidden Shipping Charges

T

he messy matter of
U.S. arms shipments
to Iran — via Israel
— becomes more complicated
every day. It already has
resulted in the worst crisis
facing the six-year presidency
of Ronald Reagan.
With several formal U.S. in-
vestigations already under-
way, and with the American
news media dropping almost
everything else in order to
pursue any new lead, the
scandal promises to get even
worse.
Ed
Attorney-General
Meese stunned everyone
when he disclosed that be-
tween $10 million and $30
million in profits from the
U.S.Israeli arms shipments to
Iran actually found their way

to the "contra" rebels fighting
the Sandinista regime in
Nicaragua. Reagan and other
senior officials were sup-
posedly unaware of this skim-
ming scheme, which Meese
acknowledged could have
violated U.S. law.
The National Security Ad-
viser, Vice Admiral John
Poindexter, resigned; his top
deputy, Lt. Col. Oliver North,
was fired. It was North, ac-
cording to Meese, who had
"precise" information of the
arrangement. But Poindexter
also knew of it — as did
former National Security Ad-
viser Robert McFarlane.
If the U.S,Israel-Iran-
Contra connection were not
enough, now enters Saudi
