most noted literati of the last
six decades. The anthologies
he compiled, the Jewish
humor he accumulated for
the generations to be
entertained while being in-
formed about important
sources, the legends he has
made available for an ap-
preciative readership — these
remain a collective and sig-
nificant contribution to
Jewish literature and histori-
cal archivism.
-Mr. Ausubel's major works
included Treasury of Jewish
Folklore, A Pictorial History
of the Jewish People, Voices
of History and numerous
other works. With his wife,
the late Marynn, he edited A
Treasury of Jewish Poetry.
In addition to the
authorship, he was a linguist,
a translator of merit and an
authority on pre-Hitler Ger-
man literature, having bef-
riended many of the anti-
Nazi writers.
Nathan Ausubel will surely
be remembered by all who
benefit from his anthological
achievements. As a friend, as
a superb social being, he will
remain . among . the most
cherished in our memory.

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
members of the clergy,
both Jewish and Christian,
with whom we share the
common work; to heal the
world.
As an introductory essay to
an informative and deeply-
moving liturgy, the husband
of the editor of this volume,
Dr. Franklin Littell, explains
The Language of the Liturgy.
It serves as a tribute to the
sponsoring movement, the
Anne Frank Institute. It re-
calls the nobility of one of the
poetic works of Nobel Litera-
ture Prize awardee Nelly
Sachs, with a lamentation
dedicated • to those who were
subjected to the "smoking
chimneys of the crematoria."
Complete congregational
religious services are pro-
vided for observance as "Sol-
idarity Sabbath Services in
Commemoration of the
Holocaust."
Special attention is drawn
to the essay in the Liturgy on
the subject "Creating Yom
HaShoah Liturgy" by Alice
Eckardt, who, together with
her husband, Dr. Roy Ec-
kardt, have leadership roles
on a national scale fighting
prejudice and anti-Semitism.
Mrs. Eckardt provides a pow-
erful guideline for fellow
Christians, declaring:
In a way that many find
strange, and yet is not,
Christian Holocaust serv-
ices can deepen and enrich
the life of a congregation
in a most unique and sig-
nificant way, by wresting
theology from dogma and
opening it up to existential
re-evaluation (a re-
evaluation shared at cer-
tain levels with our Jewish
friends), by making the
faithful more aware of the
necessity of examining
moral decisions more fully
than ever before, and by
sensitizing the worshippers
to the experiences and re-
sponses in the Holocaust
of the people from whose
midst their own faith ini-
tially sprang and onto
whose roots their own
community claims to be
engrafted.
Supplementary to the Alice
Eckardt definitive article,
there is another by Franklin
Littell, giving added em-
phasis to the valuable book,
in the article, "Yom HaShoah
Liturgy for Christians."
Jewish observers of the tragic
memorials will find them as
effective as their Christian
fellow-observers.
Other Christians have
joined in producing the Anne
Frank Institute-sponsored
book. It is not a big book, but
in the 160 pages are packed
the ethical and moral evalua-
tions by the most eminent.
Christian theologians. They
have produced a great work,
a marvelous guide toward the
Zachor and Never Forget
themes. What they have done
is to serve a challenge to
bigotry and support the prop-
agators of justice in the
battle for humanism and
against tyranny and bigotry.
In Liturgy on the Holocaust —
an Interfaith Anthology they
provide a much needed com-
pilation for peoples of all
faiths.

Arrives
In Israel
ml Aviv (JTA) — Dr. Iosif
Irlin, a world-renOwned
cancer research specialist, ar-
rived in Israel last Sunday
with his wife, Svetlana, also a
scientist, after a seven-year
struggle to leave the Soviet
Union. Both had been dis-
missed from their jobs at the
Ontological Center of the
USSR Academy of Medicine
when they first applied for ex-
it visas in April, 1979.
Irlin, 52, held a hunger
strike last August, breaking
it only when world figures, in-
cluding Israel's Chief Rabbis,
had promised to intercede on
his behalf. The U.S. Associa-
tion of Oncologists and the
French Cancer Society were
among the world bodies
which organized a campaign
to obtain his release from the
Soviet Union.
